Gene Hackman’s fortune was reported as about $80 million, but that figure is a press estimate—not a verified estate inventory or official net-worth accounting. Us Weekly attributed the estimate to the Daily Mail; its March 14, 2025 report separately said it had reviewed documents describing Hackman’s will. Those are distinct claims, and neither establishes the estate’s final value or who ultimately received it.
How much was Gene Hackman’s fortune?
The figure reported was about $80 million. Us Weekly attributed it to a Daily Mail report; the reporting cited here does not provide a complete asset list, valuation method, or official estate accounting. It should therefore be treated as an estimate, not a confirmed total.
What did reports say about Hackman’s will?
In a March 14, 2025 report, Us Weekly said it confirmed details from will documents: Hackman named his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as beneficiary and successor trustee, and the will had not been updated since June 2005. The report also said Hackman’s three children were not listed in the will.
These are reported terms of a will, not proof of the final distribution. A will’s language alone does not establish the full contents of an estate or resolve how assets were ultimately handled.

When were Hackman and Arakawa found, and when did authorities say they died?
The couple were found at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on February 26, 2025. Authorities later estimated that Arakawa died on February 11 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and that Hackman died on February 18. His pacemaker data indicated February 18 as his likely date of death. Authorities classified both deaths as natural causes, according to the Associated Press’s March 7, 2025 report.
At a news conference that day, New Mexico chief medical investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell said Hackman had significant heart disease and that it ultimately resulted in his death. Authorities also identified Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor. Jarrell said it was possible Hackman was unaware Arakawa had died.

Is the estate’s final distribution known?
Not from the reporting cited here. The Independent described uncertainty about the estate’s disposition and reported that Arakawa’s will left most of her assets to Hackman, with a provision reportedly addressing deaths within 90 days. That account is secondary reporting; it does not establish a legal outcome or identify the final recipients of either estate.
Accordingly, the reported $80 million estimate, Hackman’s reported will terms, and the eventual distribution should not be treated as interchangeable facts. The sources cited here do not establish a verified asset breakdown or final accounting.
