Kazakhstan’s reported “New Kazakhstan” rare-earth prospect is potentially large, but it is not yet a formally classified reserve or an operating mine. Euronews reported in April 2025 that a ministry spokesperson cited an estimate of 935,400 tonnes across four prospective areas, while a separate preliminary estimate put the wider site at up to 20 million tonnes. Those figures describe different scopes and should not be combined or treated as proven resources.
What was discovered in Kazakhstan?
The prospect is in the Karagandy region of central Kazakhstan. Reporting calls it “New Kazakhstan.” Euronews said exploration began in 2022 and that findings were sent to the government in October 2024. Its account of the ministry’s figures is available in its April 10, 2025 report.
How large is the reported prospect?
The two headline figures have different scopes and qualifications:
| Figure | What it refers to | Status and attribution |
|---|---|---|
| 935,400 tonnes | Total estimate for four prospective areas | Estimate attributed by Euronews in 2025 to a Kazakhstan Ministry of Industry and Construction spokesperson; not a formal reserve classification. |
| Up to 20 million tonnes | Wider “New Kazakhstan” site; reported average rare-earth content of 700 grams per tonne and depth down to 300 metres | Preliminary estimate based on ministry figures reported by Euronews in 2025; not a measured or formally classified reserve. |
These estimates should remain separate: one covers four prospective areas, while the other is a preliminary figure for the wider site. The available reporting does not establish that they use the same boundaries, measurement basis, or classification. Nor does it provide an independently validated technical report confirming tonnage, grade, mineralogy, or economic recoverability.

Is it one of the world’s largest rare-earth deposits?
That description is conditional, not an established ranking. The “top three” claim in the 2025 reporting depends on the prospective estimates being confirmed; it is not a ranking of proven reserves. The U.S. Geological Survey identifies Bayan Obo in Inner Mongolia, China, as the world’s largest known rare-earth ore deposit. Its estimates use different bases and grades, so comparing headline tonnages alone can be misleading. See the USGS discussion of rare-earth resources at Bayan Obo.
A meaningful comparison would need consistent information on classification date and category, contained rare-earth oxide tonnage, grade, depth, mineralogy, recoverability, feasibility, processing capacity, and transport access. The reported Kazakhstan figures do not provide enough independently verified detail to rank the prospect on those measures.

What still has to be established?
A large early estimate is not the same as a mineable deposit. Georgiy Freiman, executive committee chair of the Professional Association of Independent Mining Experts (PONEN), told Euronews the area required further study. He said the mineralised area’s elements must be fully examined before it can be called a deposit, and identified hydrogeology, geomechanics, extractability, and economic assessment against market conditions and industrial needs as necessary work. His assessment appears in the same Euronews report.
Formal classification and further geological and economic analysis were still outstanding in a 2026 account that revisited the story. That report is secondary; it reinforces the preliminary status but does not independently validate the figures. Until technical work supports a classified resource or reserve and demonstrates feasibility, the estimates do not show how much material could actually be extracted profitably.

How soon could extraction begin?
There is no confirmed mine schedule in the cited reporting. Arthur Poliakov, executive chairman of the MINEX Forum, projected that extraction could take 10 to 12 years. That is his estimate, not an approved development timeline. The report also cited foreign processing technology and logistics as constraints, and noted that development of the Middle Corridor could matter. These issues are discussed in Euronews’ coverage of the prospect’s development challenges.
