GM said the commercial EV market had grown more slowly than expected and that CAMI production had been suspended since May 2025. The decision concerns van production; it does not resolve what will happen to the plant.
What GM announced
GM said BrightDrop production at CAMI Assembly would end, with no transfer to another facility. In its October 21, 2025 announcement, the company stated: “BrightDrop production will not be moved to another site.”
BrightDrop vans had been sold under Chevrolet branding since 2024. GM said the change would give the vans access to Chevrolet’s commercial sales and service dealer network. In announcing that arrangement, GM estimated a combined city/highway range of 272 miles. That is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a guarantee of real-world range; actual results can vary with use and conditions. See GM’s 2024 Chevrolet dealer-network announcement.
Why GM said it was ending production
GM attributed the decision to market conditions and plant utilization. The company said the commercial electric delivery van market developed more slowly than expected, CAMI was operating below capacity, and production had been suspended since May 2025.

GM also cited a changing regulatory environment and the elimination of U.S. tax credits as factors that made the business more challenging. These are the company’s stated explanations; its announcement does not provide an independently measured breakdown of how much each factor contributed.
Kristian Aquilina, president and managing director of GM Canada, said: “The decision to end production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van is driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.”

CAMI’s future remains a separate question
Ending BrightDrop production did not determine the plant’s next use or longer-term status. GM said it would work with Unifor and the Canadian and Ontario governments while evaluating next steps for CAMI. Aquilina described the workforce’s situation as uncertain and said the company was committed to working with employees, Unifor and the governments as it considered the plant’s future.
GM’s statement also outlines compensation for hourly employees under the collective agreement, including six months of salary, potential lump-sum payments and other benefits. The announcement does not, by itself, establish what work will follow at CAMI.

Why BrightDrop may still appear in GM delivery reports
GM’s Q2 2026 U.S. delivery report includes a “BrightDrop 400 / 600 EV” category covering Chevrolet BrightDrop and BrightDrop Zevo vehicles. That reporting label does not show that production resumed after the CAMI decision. The report does not establish when those vehicles were built or explain their inventory timing. It should be read as a sales-reporting category, not proof of new production.
GM’s Q3 2025 investor materials discuss EV-related charges and non-cash impairments in connection with its broader manufacturing footprint and product decisions. Those materials describe multiple drivers and assets, so the full amount of the charges should not be attributed to BrightDrop alone. The delivery category appears in GM’s Q2 2026 delivery report.
