A linear product cycle takes materials from extraction through manufacturing and use, then typically ends with disposal. A circular product cycle aims to keep products, components, and materials useful for longer through routes such as repair, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling. It is not simply a matter of recycling at the end: product design, maintenance, collection, and the systems that move items between users and businesses all shape what is possible.
What changes from a linear cycle to a circular one?
The familiar linear model is often summarized as “take, make, dispose.” Raw materials are extracted, turned into parts and products, distributed, used, and eventually incinerated or sent to landfill. The circular model tries to preserve the usefulness and value of products and materials across additional cycles rather than treating disposal as the default endpoint.
The UK Government’s Design for Life roadmap describes a circular economy as one in which materials are delayed from becoming waste for as long as possible by keeping products and their materials at their highest value for as long as possible. Its use of “value chain” is important: a product may pass between users, service providers, manufacturers, and parts manufacturers, changing ownership or form while still serving a purpose.
Circularity is therefore a set of connected design and operating choices, not one universal end-of-life treatment. The appropriate route depends on what the product is, what condition it is in, how it was designed, and whether the services and infrastructure needed to return it are available.

How products can return to use
Different recovery routes retain different things and return them to different points in the chain. Repair and reuse preserve the product; remanufacturing and repurposing make use of products or components in another configuration; recycling recovers material for another transformation.
| Pathway | What happens | What is retained and where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Repair | A defective product is restored. | The product returns to its user. |
| Reuse | An intact product in good condition is used again, often by another user. | The product remains intact and returns to use. |
| Refurbishment | An older product is restored and brought up to date. | The product returns to use in updated condition. |
| Remanufacturing | Parts from a discarded product are used to make a new product with the same function. | Components return to a product manufacturer for incorporation into a new product. |
| Repurposing | A discarded product or its parts are used for a different function. | The product or components are retained for a different use. |
| Recycling | Material is processed into raw material for another transformation. | Recovered material can return to a parts manufacturer. |
The destinations shown for repair, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling follow the return paths illustrated in the UK Government roadmap. The routes are not interchangeable: a product that can be repaired may return to the same user, while recovered material generally needs further processing and manufacturing before it becomes a product again.

Why circularity starts in product design
A return pathway only works if the product and its surrounding system make it feasible. Research by Jaime A. Mesa and co-authors identifies design attributes including assemblability, disassemblability, durability, modularity, simplicity, standardization, commonality, and affordable spare parts as relevant to circular strategies. Their 2023 peer-reviewed paper proposes 51 design rules organized across conceptual, embodiment, and detailed design stages; these are guidance, not a binding or universal standard. See Design for circularity: a product design framework and its application to the design of a modular coffee machine.
- Durability can support longer use before a product or component needs replacement.
- Modularity and standardized interfaces can make it easier to replace or upgrade a part without discarding the whole product.
- Disassemblability can help service providers access components for repair, remanufacturing, or material recovery.
- Common parts and affordable spares can make maintenance more practical, including across product generations.
The European Commission’s CORDIS report on the ResCoM project describes planning aids such as standardized modular interfaces, spare-part compatibility across generations, remanufacturing checklists, and upgrade forecasting. These concepts can help teams plan for specific pathways; no single design feature guarantees a circular outcome. The report also describes a Circular Pathfinder, a multiple-lifecycle product design tool, part planning, a remanufacturing design checklist, an upgrade forecast tool, and a circularity calculator. These are tools documented in the project report, not confirmation that each remains available or maintained today. See the ResCoM final report.

How to choose a suitable circular pathway
There is no universally best route for every product. A company or design team can compare options by asking what value each option preserves, what return system it needs, and whether the product can be recovered in practice.
- Identify what can be retained. Is the product itself still useful, can a component be recovered, or is only the material likely to be useful?
- Define the return destination. Consider whether an item can return to its user, a service provider, a product manufacturer, or a parts manufacturer.
- Check product and service requirements. Assess durability, modularity, disassembly, standard parts, spare-part access, and the inspection or processing needed for the chosen route.
- Test the reverse flow. Consider how products will be collected, sorted, inspected, repaired, transported, and returned. Design changes alone do not create these services.
- Compare relevant measures. The ResCoM report describes modeling mass and value flows and comparing indicators such as circularity, recycling rate, and value recovery potential. These measure different things; a high recycling rate by itself does not prove that the product’s value was retained to the greatest extent.
Do not assume a circular option will automatically cost less or have a lower environmental impact. The available evidence describes strategies and design considerations, but does not establish a universal cost or lifecycle benefit for an unspecified product.

What a real-world example shows
The UK Government’s Design for Life roadmap reports that the ophthalmology department at Northampton Hospitals NHS Trust switched to reusable scissors that could be decontaminated with other surgical instruments. The roadmap says the change saved 1,000 pairs of single-use scissors and £12,000 in costs. It also reports that NHS procurement data showed several million pairs of single-use scissors were used and discarded in financial year 2022–23 in England and Wales. These figures relate specifically to the reported UK medtech and NHS context, not to product cycles generally.
The same roadmap cites studies reporting an average 50% saving on the sales price of remanufactured harmonic shears. That figure is a secondary report of studies cited by the roadmap, not an independent review of their underlying analyses. It illustrates a possible commercial incentive in that product category, not a general price outcome for remanufactured goods.

Why coordination matters beyond the design team
Products need practical routes back into use or production. Collection systems, service providers able to inspect and repair products, manufacturers able to use recovered components, and facilities able to process materials all affect whether a designed pathway can work. Both the UK roadmap’s lifecycle diagram and the ResCoM report connect design decisions with other organizations and stages in the value chain.
A company case published by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation describes H&M Group using an early version of its Circulator tool to explore circular design principles for different product types and discussing work across garment lifecycle stages. It is an example of a company exploring design choices, not independent evidence of the company’s overall environmental impact or current performance. See the H&M Group case page.
