Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi was reported to have said that 30% of Black Myth: Wukong’s player base came from outside China. That is not the same as a verified regional sales breakdown: the often-repeated estimate of 7.5 million overseas copies comes from applying that share to a separate, reported 25-million sales total.
What Yang Qi was reported to say
In a February 24, 2025 report, 80 Level said Yang Qi made the remark at the West Lake Art Forum, held at the China Academy of Art’s School of Animation and Games. The outlet characterized the figure as 30% of the game’s player base coming from outside China. Read 80 Level’s account.

That wording matters. A share of players is not automatically a share of copies sold: the measures may use different definitions or counts. Push Square’s same-day report described roughly 30% of sales as international, but it is also secondary coverage and does not establish an independently measured regional unit count. Read Push Square’s account.
Where the 7.5-million estimate comes from
80 Level paired the 30% figure with an approximately 25-million total sales figure attributed to a January 30 Niko Partners report. Applying 30% to 25 million gives 7.5 million. That is an arithmetic estimate published by 80 Level—not a directly announced, audited count of copies sold outside China. The Niko Partners figure is cited by the two outlets; the original report is not independently established here.

|---|---|---|
| 30% | Player base outside China, in the closest report of Yang Qi’s remark | Yang Qi, as reported by 80 Level on February 24, 2025 |
| Approximately 25 million | Total copies sold | Niko Partners, as cited by 80 Level and Push Square; January 30 report referenced in 80 Level’s article |
| Approximately 7.5 million | Estimated copies outside China if the 30% share is applied to the 25-million total | 80 Level’s calculation; not a directly announced regional sales count |
What the figure can—and cannot—tell you
The strongest supported reading is that Yang Qi was reported as describing an international share of the player base. Secondary coverage recast the percentage as a share of sales, while 80 Level used it to estimate a regional copy count. Those are related claims, but they should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
80 Level also attributes the English rendering “Familiarity and strangeness form a scale” to Yang Qi, in reference to overseas audiences encountering cultural elements that may be unfamiliar. Because the original interview is in Chinese and its wording and full context have not been independently verified here, the quotation should be understood as 80 Level’s translation and attribution.

For readers following the game as a commercial release, Push Square identifies Black Myth: Wukong as a PS5 game and lists Game Science as its developer and publisher. The available reporting supports an international audience, but it does not provide a precise, verified regional sales ledger.
