That was an estimate of indefinite layoffs—not a verified final count of permanent job losses. The story later changed: GM announced on October 21, 2025, that BrightDrop production at CAMI would end and would not move to another site.
What happened in April 2025?
GM Canada said the production halt was connected to market demand and high inventory. A company spokesperson described the adjustment as a way to balance inventory and align production schedules with current demand, according to The Associated Press. The April action was described as a production pause and shift adjustment, not yet as a decision to end BrightDrop production at CAMI.
The widely repeated figure of 500 came from an estimate by Unifor, the union representing CAMI workers. AP reported that Unifor expected around 500 indefinite layoffs after a planned restart on a single shift. TechCrunch’s headline summarized the news as GM cutting 500 jobs, but the figure should not be read as a final, independently confirmed tally of workers permanently separated from the company.

In its October announcement, GM cited a commercial electric delivery-van market that had developed more slowly than expected, along with changing regulation and the elimination of U.S. tax credits as challenges. The company’s stated reasons are its explanation for the decision; they do not independently establish that any one factor caused weak demand or determined the employment outcome. GM Canada president and managing director Kristian Aquilina said the decision was driven by market demand and “in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.” The statement is GM’s position, not an independent assessment of the causes.

What do GM’s later delivery figures show?
GM’s U.S. delivery table for the third quarter of 2026 lists 1,344 BrightDrop 400/600 EVs delivered, compared with 2,384 in the third quarter of 2025, a reported decrease of 43.6%. For the year to date through Q3, the table lists 2,300 versus 3,976, down 42.2%. The category combines Chevrolet BrightDrop 400/600 EV and BrightDrop Zevo 400/600.

They do not establish an independently verified final count of affected workers or how many ultimately experienced permanent job loss.
