GameStop shut down Game Informer on August 2, 2024, ending the magazine’s 33-year run under the retailer. The outlet returned in March 2025 under new ownership, with its former team and archive back. The closure was real, but it was not the end of the publication.
What happened to Game Informer?
On August 2, 2024, GameStop announced that Game Informer was closing. Staff were told during a meeting that day and laid off immediately, according to GameSpot’s report from August 2, 2024. The magazine’s farewell statement described the closure as ending 33 years of gaming news, reviews, and coverage.
The last completed print issue was #367, published in June 2024, according to GamesBeat’s August 2, 2024 report, updated June 18, 2025. Then-content director Kyle Hilliard said the next issue was about 70% complete when work stopped. That was his estimate of the work in progress, not a published issue or independently measured figure.
Game Developer’s August 2, 2024 coverage reported that the final print issue covered Dragon Age: The Veilguard and that staff had been working on digital coverage of The Casting of Frank Stone. Those details describe the publication’s work at the time; they do not mean the unfinished next issue was released.

How did Game Informer’s 33-year run begin?
From a six-page store magazine to a monthly publication
Game Informer debuted in August 1991 as a six-page magazine distributed through game stores. It was published every two months at first and became monthly in 1994, according to Game Developer’s history of the closure. GamesBeat reported 367 published issues by the time of the shutdown.

Its connection to GameStop
The magazine became closely associated with GameStop after the company acquired FuncoLand in 2000, according to GamesBeat. That long connection ended with GameStop’s 2024 shutdown announcement; the publication’s subsequent revival took place under different ownership.

The relaunch announcement said the team planned to bring back print and introduce membership and subscription benefits. Those were plans stated at launch, not confirmation of current subscription terms. The announcement’s return of the archive and the team marked a revival of the outlet, rather than a continuation of GameStop’s ownership.
