The GameStop stapler auction tied to damaged Nintendo Switch 2 screens ultimately closed at a reported $250,000, not the $108,895 high bid reported while bidding was still open. The one-off charity lot included the stapler, a repaired console, its marked packaging and the staple removed from the screen.
What happened to the Switch 2 screens?
During the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, an employee at a GameStop store in Staten Island, New York, stapled customers’ receipts to the console boxes. The Switch 2 sat just beneath the cardboard flap, so a staple could pierce the box and puncture the screen. GameSpot reported the damage and GameStop’s response on June 6, 2025: the company said the incident was limited to that one store and that the affected customers—a “very small fraction,” in its words—were swiftly given replacements. The reports do not establish an exact number of damaged consoles. GameSpot’s account of the incident

“Staplegate” is a press nickname for the mishap, not an official name for a GameStop program or product.
What did GameStop put up for auction?
In July 2025, GameStop auctioned a bundle connected to the incident for charity. GameSpot described the lot as including the used stapler, the repaired Switch 2, the retail packaging bearing its staple mark, and the staple extracted from the console. The beneficiary was Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen’s letter called the items “authentic relics from the now-infamous ‘Staplegate’ incident,” as reported by GameSpot. Why did coverage say $108K if the auction closed at $250K?
The figures refer to different moments in the bidding, not conflicting final prices. Video Games Chronicle reported a high bid of $108,895 while the auction was still open on July 10, 2025. GamesRadar later reported that bidding closed at $250,000 after 282 bids. VGC’s live-bid report · GamesRadar’s report of the closing amount
During the auction, GameStop said, “While the incident itself was unfortunate, we hope its legacy serves a greater purpose,” as reproduced by VGC. The $250,000 amount is a reported result for this unusual charity lot; it is not a normal retail price for a Switch 2 or a general measure of the console’s value.
