Anne Wojcicki’s nonprofit, TTAM Research Institute, won 23andMe’s court-supervised bankruptcy auction with a $305 million cash bid, and the sale closed on July 14, 2025. “Bought back the company” is headline shorthand: TTAM acquired specified assets from the bankrupt company, not its publicly traded shares. For customers, the sale documents and current consent materials describe privacy commitments and choices, but they do not make genetic data risk-free.
How TTAM won the auction
23andMe Holding Co. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 23, 2025, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, and pursued a court-supervised sale of substantially all its assets. (SEC filing)
At the first auction, the company selected Regeneron as the successful bidder and TTAM as the backup. Regeneron’s bid was $256 million in cash, plus specified liabilities. TTAM later offered $305 million in cash. After a further bidding round, the company selected TTAM as the winner on June 13, 2025; Regeneron became the backup bidder, and its agreement was terminated. These were bids under different agreements, so the headline figures alone do not establish that each bidder would have assumed identical liabilities. (SEC filing)
| Bidder | Stage and amount | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Regeneron | Initial successful bid: $256 million in cash, plus specified liabilities, according to 23andMe’s 2025 SEC filing. | Later became the backup bidder after TTAM won the final round. |
| TTAM Research Institute | Later winning bid: $305 million in cash, in addition to specified liabilities and cure payments under the agreement, according to 23andMe’s 2025 SEC filing. | Selected as the winner on June 13, 2025. |
What “buys back the company” means
TTAM Research Institute was a California nonprofit public benefit corporation affiliated with and led by 23andMe co-founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki. The transaction was an acquisition of substantially all specified assets from the debtor—not a purchase of the former public company’s shares. (SEC filing)

The principal businesses in the asset sale were the Personal Genome Service, which included consumer DNA testing, and Research Services. Lemonaid Health’s telehealth business was handled separately in the transaction structure: the filing identifies it as excluded from the core asset sale and describes a separate $2.5 million stalking-horse arrangement. It would be inaccurate to describe all Lemonaid operations as simply transferred with the main assets. (SEC filing)
When the sale closed
The bankruptcy court approved the TTAM transaction on June 27, 2025, and it closed on July 14, 2025. 23andMe announced completion after the court approval. (23andMe announcement)

At the time of approval, Mark Jensen, chair of the board and a member of its special committee, said the transaction would help ensure that 23andMe’s founding mission “lives on globally.” That was the company’s stated intention for the sale, not an independent assessment of its effects.
What the sale says about customer privacy
TTAM said it would follow 23andMe’s existing privacy policies and preserve customer choice and transparency, including a way to change research-participation decisions. State officials said the final sale conditions added consumer and security protections, including deletion rights and requirements for future data transfers. These are commitments and legal conditions—not a guarantee that data cannot be exposed or misused. (Missouri Attorney General)

The question “I’m a 23andMe customer. Is my genetic data safe?” cannot be answered with one blanket assurance. Your choices depend in part on account settings and consent decisions, and data security always carries some risk. 23andMe Research Institute’s current consent page describes separate options for broad research participation, sharing individual-level data with qualified collaborators, and storing or re-analyzing a physical DNA sample for future research. The company says research participation is optional, choices can be changed or withdrawn in account settings, and research is subject to independent institutional review board (IRB) review. (23andMe Research Institute consent information)
The 2023 breach remains relevant to evaluating those assurances. In a 2026 update on a multistate settlement, the Maryland Attorney General said the breach affected 6.9 million consumers and described settlement provisions requiring security measures, advisory oversight, privacy-law commitments, and consumer deletion rights. This is the state’s account of its investigation and settlement. (Maryland Attorney General)

What the nonprofit has done since the acquisition
On May 20, 2026, 23andMe Research Institute announced a partnership with HealthEx to connect member-authorized medical records. The announcement described Health Summary as in development and available to customers participating in a beta program—not as a finished service generally available to all customers. The institute reported more than 30,000 beta participants, more than 11 million consented research participants, and more than 4 billion phenotypic data points. Those figures are the institute’s own reported numbers, not independent audit results. (23andMe Research Institute announcement)
