For 25 Years, This Millionaire Has Lived From Cruise to Cruise. His Biggest Problem Isn’t Money—but Life on Land

Mario Salcedo’s cruise lifestyle reportedly costs about $101,000 a year, but his account of feeling unsteady ashore reveals another trade-off. The figure is not a full budget or proof that cruising is cheaper than living on land.

Mario Salcedo’s reported challenge with living cruise to cruise is not simply the cost: after years at sea, he has described feeling unsteady when he returns to land. That does not establish a medical diagnosis, and the often-quoted figure of about $101,000 a year is reported cruise spending—not a complete budget or proof that cruise living costs less than life ashore.

How Mario Salcedo came to live aboard

Salcedo, a Cuban-born businessman known in cruise coverage as “Super Mario,” reportedly took his first cruise in 1997 and began living almost continuously aboard Royal Caribbean ships around 2000. A MailOnline report republished by All Things Cruise on January 26, 2025, says he paused for 15 months during the COVID-era suspension of cruising. These biographical details come from media reporting, not independently verified travel records. All Things Cruise’s 2025 report

The same report says his 1,000th voyage was aboard Explorer of the Seas, departing Miami on January 5 for an 11-night Panama and southern Caribbean sailing. The date and itinerary are as reported in that coverage.

What the reported $101,000 figure does—and doesn’t—mean

Coverage puts Salcedo’s cruise spending at about $101,000 per year and says he funds the lifestyle through investment-management work, reportedly working about five hours each day. Treat the figure as an account of his reported cruise spending, not an audited annual budget, a current fare quote, or a measure of his total finances. All Things Cruise

#1 Best Overall
The Cruise Book | The Cruise Adventure Book To Document Your Travels
  • The Cruise Book features 48 pages for you to travel your cruises--all in one place! A perfect gift for cruise lovers and a book that will look stunning on your coffee table.
  • A new and innovative way to document your cruise travels and preserve your most cherished seafaring memories. Others make you order additional product and wait weeks just to add to your cruise journal--skip the wait AND place your own cruise card in the book! Included are two sheets of corner stickers to place your card!
  • Each page offers space to document your journey, such as the ship you went on and the dates of your cruise. After, map it on the included map!

It also cannot establish whether living aboard is cheaper than living ashore. A fair personal comparison would include total costs, not just cruise fares, and account for time spent ashore, medical access, work and internet needs, and the ability to handle personal and administrative obligations. The available reporting does not provide a universal break-even point or a typical full-time cruiser budget.

The land-based problem: feeling in motion after a voyage

In a 2016 Condé Nast Traveler interview, later quoted by VICE, Salcedo described his experience this way: “I’ve lost my land legs. I’m swaying so much I can’t walk in a straight line.” He also said, “I’m so used to being on ships that it feels more comfortable to me than being on land.” Those are his reported descriptions of how he feels; they are not a clinical assessment. What mal de débarquement syndrome is

Mal de débarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a vestibular disorder that can make someone feel as if they are moving while stationary. Cleveland Clinic says it commonly follows boating or sea travel. Symptoms usually resolve within 24 hours, though they can last months or years; there is no single sure-fire cure, and management varies. Cleveland Clinic’s medically reviewed overview

That general medical information does not show that Salcedo has MdDS. A 2026 lifestyle article applies a disorder label to his reported symptoms, but the reviewed coverage does not include an independent clinical diagnosis. It is more accurate to describe his reported swaying or balance problems than to say he has a confirmed condition.

Cleveland Clinic’s 2024 page says some studies suggest about 150,000 people in the United States may have MdDS and reports that 85% of cases affect women ages 30 to 60. Those are general figures, not facts about Salcedo. Cleveland Clinic

Is that really his “biggest problem”?

The headline’s wording is stronger than the evidence can verify. Coverage highlights Salcedo’s reported difficulty readjusting to land, while other accounts point to social and logistical burdens. The material available does not establish that Salcedo himself ranked any one of these as his biggest problem. That distinction matters: a striking headline is not the same thing as a direct, verified statement of priorities.

For anyone considering extended cruising, the practical questions go beyond the fare: can you maintain the work and connectivity you need, arrange routine care, manage paperwork and obligations, and spend enough time ashore to make the arrangement sustainable? Salcedo’s profile illustrates a trade-off, not a template or a cost-saving guarantee.
