NEOM’s first destination to receive visitors was Sindalah, a luxury island in the Red Sea. NEOM announced its opening in October 2024 and said it had welcomed invited guests. That announcement did not establish unrestricted public access: reporting at the time said tourists could not yet book overnight stays, and the available sources do not verify Sindalah’s current operating or booking status.
What is the first area of NEOM to open?
It is Sindalah, a luxury island destination that NEOM described as its “first physical showcase.” Saudi Press Agency reported that the island is five kilometers off NEOM’s coastline in northwest Saudi Arabia and covers 840,000 square meters. Saudi Press Agency, 27 October 2024
When did Sindalah open?
NEOM announced Sindalah’s opening on 27 October 2024, saying it had welcomed its first wave of invited guests. The Saudi Press Agency report carried by the Official Gazette the following day also described it as NEOM’s first destination to receive visitors. These reports establish an announced opening and an initial invited-guest visit, not a full public opening.
An earlier announcement, on 5 December 2022, had forecast that Sindalah would begin welcoming guests in early 2024. That was a projected timeframe, not the opening date. Saudi Press Agency, 5 December 2022
Can tourists book a stay or visit Sindalah?
At the time of the opening announcement, invited guests had visited, but tourists could not yet book overnight stays, according to The National’s 28 October 2024 report. That is a dated status report; it does not establish whether public bookings or visits are available now. The available official project announcements likewise do not confirm present-day admission, hotel operations, or booking access. Check NEOM’s current visitor and booking information before planning a trip.

Saudi Press Agency reported a 6,474-yard (5,920-meter), par-70 golf course as part of Sindalah’s specifications. This is a reported project detail, not confirmation that the course is currently operating. The opening announcement also reported that work at peak involved 30,000 workers across four local contracting partners and up to 60 subcontractors; that is the announcement’s workforce figure, not an independently audited count.
