Ford is scaling back selected larger electric-vehicle programs because, the company said in December 2025, weaker-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes had eroded their long-term business case. It has not abandoned EVs: Ford plans to focus its all-electric development on smaller, more affordable models while putting more capital into hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles and utility-scale battery storage.
For car buyers, that means more powertrain choices rather than an immediate end to Ford EVs. For investors, it means a costly reset whose expected charges are large, while management’s profitability and growth targets remain goals—not established results.
Why did Ford change its EV strategy?
Ford said the business case for selected larger EV programs had weakened, and that it no longer saw a path to long-term profitability in its EV business without changes. In its December 15, 2025 announcement, the company cited lower-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes. Those are Ford’s stated explanations; the announced figures do not independently measure how much each factor contributed.
The response is a change in capital allocation, not a blanket retreat from electrification. Ford plans to redirect investment toward trucks and vans, hybrids, extended-range electric propulsion, more affordable EVs and stationary energy storage. CEO Jim Farley described the shift as redeploying capital into what Ford sees as higher-return opportunities. That is management’s rationale, not an independent verdict on which businesses will prove more profitable.

What is Ford changing—and what is it keeping?
Ford’s plan divides electrification among three powertrain types. The distinctions matter because the company’s 2030 target combines all three; it is not a target for hybrids alone.

Ford said it aims for hybrids, extended-range EVs and full EVs together to make up about 50% of its global volume by 2030, compared with 17% in 2025. The target does not say how much of that 50% will come from any one category.

What does the pivot mean for Ford’s finances?
Ford forecast about $19.5 billion in special items related to the shift in its December 2025 announcement. The company expected most accounting charges to be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the remainder in 2026 and 2027. It forecast about $5.5 billion in cash effects, with most cash outflows in 2026 and the rest in 2027. The special-item figure and the cash-effect figure describe different aspects of the expected financial impact; neither should be treated as the amount of cash leaving the business all at once.
Those charges are not the whole story of Ford’s financial performance, and they are not a standalone measure of EV losses. Ford reported 2025 diluted earnings per share of negative $2.06 and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.09. Its adjusted EBIT margin was 3.6% in 2025, down from 5.5% in 2024. These are company-reported results across the business, not figures that isolate the EV pivot.

In its 2026 second-quarter filing, Ford’s full-year outlook was adjusted EBIT of $10.0 billion to $11.0 billion and a Ford Model e EBIT loss of about $4.0 billion. The filing also noted about $1.0 billion of incremental investment for the Universal EV platform and Ford Energy. These are outlook figures, not final full-year results.
Ford’s December 2025 announcement projected a path to Ford Model e profitability by 2029, with annual improvement beginning in 2026. That remains a management target. Whether the pivot improves returns depends on execution and on whether demand and costs develop as Ford expects.

What does the hybrid strategy mean for car buyers?
A hybrid gives buyers an electrified option without requiring them to rely on public charging or install a home charger. An extended-range EV offers electric propulsion with an onboard generator for additional range, while a full EV has no onboard combustion engine for propulsion. The right fit depends on driving patterns, access to charging and the buyer’s preference for how the vehicle is powered; Ford’s strategic announcement does not establish which option will be cheaper to own.
The 2026 F-150 is a concrete example of a hybrid Ford already offers: its product information lists an available 3.5L PowerBoost full-hybrid V6. Ford’s page lists up to 430 horsepower and 578 lb-ft of torque in one listing, but ratings may vary by trim and configuration. That example shows Ford continues to sell a hybrid truck; it does not prove the broader strategy will succeed.

What is Ford Energy?
Introduced in May 2026, Ford Energy is a wholly owned Ford business aimed at utilities, data centers, and large commercial and industrial customers in the United States. Its Ford Energy DC Block is a U.S.-assembled, containerized battery energy storage system built around 512 Ah lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) prismatic cells. Ford describes two variants, distinguished by discharge duration:

Ford says the systems use liquid-cooled thermal management and a battery management system, and are designed for 20-year performance. That service-life figure is Ford’s design claim, not independently verified evidence of actual operating life. The DC Block is utility-scale infrastructure, not a home battery for residential customers.
Ford said it is repurposing battery manufacturing capacity in Glendale, Kentucky, and plans to deploy at least 20 GWh of annual capacity, with first customer deliveries planned for late 2027. These are capacity and delivery plans, not evidence that the facility has already reached that output.
What does the EDF agreement establish?
Ford announced a five-year framework agreement under which EDF power solutions North America could procure up to 4 GWh of DC Block systems per year, or up to 20 GWh over the agreement. Deliveries were expected to begin in 2028. The agreement provides a potential route to market for the storage systems, including applications such as renewable integration and grid resilience; its maximum volume is not a statement that EDF has purchased all of that capacity.
For Ford, the storage business offers a way to use battery manufacturing expertise and repurposed capacity outside passenger vehicles. The agreement is evidence of a commercial framework, not proof of the business’s eventual revenue, margins or operating performance.
