Chris Rocheleau’s FAA Deputy Administrator Transition: What the Record Shows

The FAA announced on July 10, 2025, that Chris Rocheleau would move from Acting Administrator to Deputy Administrator as Bryan Bedford became Administrator. The announcement confirms the transition, but the FAA materials reviewed do not establish when—or whether—a separate swearing-in ceremony took place. Rocheleau has since returned to the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) as chief operating officer, according to the association’s August 2026 biography.

What happened on July 10, 2025?

In its July 10, 2025 announcement, the Federal Aviation Administration said Bryan Bedford became FAA Administrator and that Rocheleau, who had served as Acting Administrator, would transition to Deputy Administrator. The FAA wrote that Rocheleau “will now transition to the role of Deputy Administrator to support Bedford.”

That announcement documents a leadership transition, not a specific oath ceremony. The reviewed FAA materials do not confirm a ceremonial swearing-in date, so the headline’s wording should not be taken as verification of when an oath was administered.

Who is Chris Rocheleau?

Rocheleau is an aviation and public-service executive who served more than 20 years at the FAA, according to a FAA biography published for the 2024 Drone and AAM Symposium. Before his FAA career, he was a U.S. Air Force officer and special agent, and an early leader at the Transportation Security Administration. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2010 as a lieutenant colonel.

His FAA experience

The FAA biography lists senior roles across aviation safety, policy, international affairs, emergency operations and agency leadership. They included acting associate administrator for aviation safety, chief of staff, assistant administrator for policy, international affairs and environment, executive director for international affairs, and director of the Office of Emergency Operations and Investigations.

His education included a bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State University, a master of public administration from City University of Seattle, Harvard Kennedy School’s Executive National Security Program, the U.S. Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College, and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Corporate Aviation Program.

What did he do after the transition?

NBAA’s August 2026 biography says Rocheleau returned to the association as COO in August 2026. It says he had held the COO role before joining the FAA as Acting Administrator in January 2025.

In describing his later FAA service, NBAA says Rocheleau supported work on air traffic controller hiring, a new air traffic control system, the MOSAIC rule and the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. Those are the association’s retrospective descriptions of his work, not an independent assessment of the results of those efforts.

Who is listed as FAA Deputy Administrator now?

The FAA’s Key Officials page, updated August 25, 2026, lists Liam McKenna as Acting Deputy Administrator. That current roster and NBAA’s account of Rocheleau’s return establish that he no longer held the listed deputy administrator post by that date.

An older FAA About page still names Rocheleau, but it was last updated July 30, 2025. For status after that point, the later-dated FAA roster and NBAA biography are more current.

What Rocheleau’s public statements covered

Rocheleau testified to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on June 4, 2025, about the FAA’s fiscal year 2026 budget request. His written testimony said the President’s Budget requested $22.0 billion for FY 2026 and described a $27.0 billion total commitment when combined with $5.0 billion in previously enacted advance annual appropriations. These were figures in a 2025 budget-request testimony, not current funding levels.

In that testimony, he described the FAA’s mission as “to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world.” In separate testimony to a Senate subcommittee on March 27, 2025, concerning the NTSB preliminary report on the January collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, he expressed sympathy for victims’ families and said the FAA continued to support the NTSB investigations, with findings to inform future FAA actions.
