On January 22, 2024, the day of the Ram temple inauguration in Ayodhya, authorities in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan asked Zomato not to deliver non-vegetarian food, according to a Scroll report published that day. Zomato Care said the company disabled non-veg delivery in those five states in response to government notice. This was a measure tied to that date, not evidence of Zomato’s current policy.
Which states were named, and what did Zomato say?
Scroll named five states: Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Zomato Care’s public account wrote: “Hi, we have disabled delivery of non-veg items in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan as per govt. notice. Hope this clarification helps!” The report reproduces the statement without naming an individual speaker or identifying their job title.
The report describes the state authorities as asking Zomato not to deliver non-vegetarian food. The underlying notices were not reviewed, so their precise wording, issuing authority, legal basis and geographic scope cannot be independently established from the available account.
What other food restrictions were reported?
Meat, liquor and slaughterhouses
Scroll said authorities in several BJP-ruled states banned liquor and meat sales and ordered slaughterhouses to remain closed in connection with the inauguration. It did not provide a state-by-state list of those measures, so they should not be attributed uniformly to all five states named in Zomato Care’s statement.
