The confirmed disruption is historical: in 2024, BA said delays in Rolls-Royce engine and parts deliveries were forcing schedule changes, and its chief executive was reported saying four 787s were then on the ground because engines were unavailable.
Rolls-Royce reported progress on Trent 1000 durability improvements in April 2026, but its update did not identify BA aircraft or confirm their current status. The old 2024 figures should not be presented as a current fleet count.
What is confirmed about BA’s 787s?
The evidence supports a 2024 engine-supply problem affecting BA’s Boeing 787 schedule—not a new grounding in 2026. In December 2024, The Independent quoted a British Airways spokesperson saying the airline had made further schedule changes amid delays in deliveries of Rolls-Royce engines and parts, particularly Trent 1000 engines fitted to its 787 aircraft.
Separately, an Aviation Week interview with BA’s chief executive in 2024 reported that four 787s were then on the ground because engines were unavailable. That is a dated statement about the situation at the time of the interview; it does not establish how many aircraft, if any, are affected now.

What does the 2026 Rolls-Royce update say?
In its 30 April 2026 trading update, Rolls-Royce said its aggregate count of large-engine aircraft on ground was in the single digits at the end of April. It also said more than a third of the operational Trent 1000 TEN fleet had been upgraded with improved high-pressure turbine blades.
Those are manufacturer-reported, fleet-wide figures. Rolls-Royce did not give a BA-specific count, so neither figure confirms whether BA’s 787s were grounded or available. An aircraft-on-ground total across the manufacturer’s large-engine business is not a proxy for the status of one airline’s fleet.

Why the Trent 1000 matters—and what is changing
The shortage story concerns Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to Boeing 787s. Rolls-Royce has described the Trent 1000 XE as a durability-enhanced engine standard for the 787 family, including a redesigned high-pressure turbine blade.
In an April 2026 announcement about LATAM, Rolls-Royce said the redesigned blade increases cooling airflow by 40% and provides more than double the time-on-wing of its predecessor. These are the manufacturer’s claims about the design, not independently established results for BA aircraft. The company’s 2025 introduction to the Trent 1000 XE describes the durability changes, while its 29 April 2026 LATAM announcement provides the blade comparison.

- Simple snap-fit design
- Authentic markings
- The model measures 7"H x 12"L x 15.25"W
- Recommended age is 14 and up
Design improvements and fleet-wide upgrade progress do not, by themselves, show that a particular airline has resolved its supply constraints. The public update does not say how many BA engines have received the changes.

Not on the available evidence. BA’s historical Rolls-Royce contract covered Trent 900 engines for its Airbus A380s and Trent 1000 engines for its Boeing 787s, as the manufacturer stated in its 2011 contract announcement. The two aircraft types use different engine models.

AeroRoutes reported selected BA A380 schedule changes for September 2026 through March 2027, including service substitutions. That report does not attribute those changes to Trent 1000 shortages or establish that A380 availability is linked to the 787 issue. A schedule substitution is not, on its own, proof that an aircraft is grounded or why it was changed.
What remains unknown about BA’s current fleet?
The cited public statements do not establish whether BA has newly grounded any 787 in 2026 because of missing Trent 1000 parts, how many aircraft might be affected, or which routes and dates would be impacted. Nor do they provide a new BA explanation. The sound conclusion is limited: the shortage caused reported disruption in 2024, while the available 2026 manufacturer update is not specific enough to verify BA’s present fleet status.
