Fervo Energy announced $206 million in additional financing for its Cape Station geothermal project in Beaver County, Utah, on June 11, 2025. The announcement’s three financing components add up to $205.6 million. Since then, Fervo has reported first power from Cape Station’s first 33-megawatt unit, while the rest of the project remains under construction.
What did Fervo Energy’s $206 million financing include?
Fervo described three transactions in its June 11, 2025 announcement. Their stated amounts total $205.6 million, which accounts for the rounded $206 million headline.
| Financing component | Amount | Provider |
|---|---|---|
| Project-level preferred equity | $100 million | Breakthrough Energy Catalyst |
| Increase to an existing corporate term-loan facility | $60 million | Mercuria |
| Additional bridge debt | $45.6 million | XRL-ALC, an affiliate of X-Caliber Rural Capital |
Fervo said the preferred-equity investment followed technical, financial and environmental diligence. These are different forms of financing: preferred equity is an investment in the project, while the term-loan increase and bridge debt are borrowing.
What is Cape Station, and where is it?
Cape Station is Fervo’s enhanced geothermal development in Beaver County, Utah. The project uses underground heat to generate electricity. Fervo says it applies horizontal drilling techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry, allowing multiple wells to be drilled from a single pad and access to geothermal resources that conventional geothermal technology could not reach. Those are Fervo’s descriptions of its approach and its potential.

How much electricity is Cape Station expected to produce?
Fervo’s announced project capacities refer to different stages and must not be treated as the same measure.

| Measure | What Fervo reported | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Phase I | Approximately 100 MW, arranged in three 33 MW GeoBlocks | The initial construction phase |
| Phase II | 400 MW | An additional phase under construction, with expected commercial operation in 2028 |
| Permitted expansion | Up to 2 GW | Potential expansion allowed by project permitting, not current generating capacity |
| Contracted offtake | Approximately 900 MW | Power covered by Cape Station offtake agreements, not the plant’s current output |
Fervo announced first power on September 24, 2026. At that point, the first 33 MW GeoBlock was generating electricity and ramping up. The company expected it to reach its contractual commercial-operations date by October 1, 2026, and expected the other two Phase I GeoBlocks to reach their contractual dates by January 1, 2027. Fervo said the additional 400 MW Phase II was under construction and expected to reach commercial operation in 2028. These are company-announced targets, not independently confirmed completion dates.
What happened to the 2025 bridge debt?
The 2025 financing announcement is not the latest update on Cape Station’s debt. Fervo’s Q1 2026 results described $421.4 million in non-recourse project debt for Cape Station Phase I under Project Granite. Its Q2 2026 report said the company used the $421 million Project Granite financing to repay all outstanding borrowings under the XRC facility and that the facility was terminated. The 2025 bridge debt should therefore not be described as still outstanding.

How does Cape Station fit into Fervo’s wider plans?
Fervo’s Q2 2026 report said its development pipeline exceeded 50 GW at quarter-end and its land portfolio exceeded 650,000 acres. Those are company-reported portfolio figures; pipeline and land holdings are not built or operating power capacity.
Fervo’s Q1 2026 results named Turboden, ABB and Vallourec as strategic suppliers for power generation, electrical equipment and well construction. The same report described a Google Geothermal Framework Agreement covering up to 3 GW through 2033. These relationships provide commercial context, but they do not change Cape Station’s phased construction capacity.

Fervo CEO and co-founder Tim Latimer called first power “a gamechanger for the geothermal industry” and said he believed it showed EGS’s commercial and technical maturity was ready to meet demand for reliable, clean power. That is Latimer’s assessment. CTO and co-founder Jack Norbeck said Cape Station works because the company “treated the subsurface like an engineering challenge.”
