Why FedEx Extended Its MD-11 Retirement Plan to 2032 and Added Eight Boeing 777Fs

FedEx's MD-11 retirement target now runs to the end of 2032, alongside an order for eight 777Fs. The plan does not mean every MD-11 will fly until then.

FedEx extended its planned retirement of the MD-11 fleet from 2028 to the end of 2032 and exercised options to buy eight Boeing 777F freighters. The company said the longer timeline better aligns air-network capacity with current and anticipated shipment volumes. The 2032 date is a fleet plan, not a promise that every MD-11 will keep flying until then: FedEx later reported permanently retiring five MD-11s in 2026, and an FAA emergency directive grounded the type in November 2025.

What FedEx changed

In its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, FedEx said Federal Express exercised options to purchase eight Boeing 777F aircraft. The company expected three deliveries in calendar 2026 and five in calendar 2027, while noting that delays could change the schedule. In the same filing, FedEx moved its planned end date for retiring the entire MD-11 fleet from 2028 to the end of 2032. FedEx fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.

FedEx described the reason for the retirement-plan change as “to better align the air network capacity of Federal Express to match current and anticipated shipment volumes.” This is the company’s explanation in its filing, not a quotation from a named executive.

Why keep MD-11s in the plan while ordering 777Fs?

The filing presents the 777F purchases as part of a broader aircraft-modernization program that also includes Boeing 767-300 freighters. FedEx says the newer aircraft are significantly more fuel-efficient per unit than aircraft types previously used and are intended to support long-term operating savings while replacing older aircraft. The filing does not say that each of the eight 777Fs directly replaces one MD-11, so the order should not be read as a one-for-one swap.

The two decisions address fleet planning on different timelines: FedEx added 777Fs with expected deliveries in 2026 and 2027, while extending the target date for retiring its MD-11 fleet. The company reported that the retirement-plan decision resulted in a $19 million net decrease in depreciation expense in 2025. That figure is the reported accounting effect for that year; it is not a measure of fuel savings or a recurring annual benefit.

Does every FedEx MD-11 stay in service until 2032?

No. The end-of-2032 date is the planned retirement date for the fleet, not a guarantee about any individual aircraft. FedEx’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K says it decided to permanently retire five MD-11 aircraft in 2026 and still describes the fleet as planned for retirement by the end of 2032. Are FedEx MD-11s flying?

FedEx’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended February 28, 2026 says the FAA issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive in November 2025 addressing a potentially unsafe condition on MD-11 aircraft. The directive prohibited further flight until inspections and corrective actions were completed. FedEx reported operational impacts from the grounding and an effect on financial results. FedEx Form 10-Q for the quarter ended February 28, 2026.

That filing establishes the grounding and its impact during the reported period, but it does not establish the aircraft type’s status after that period. The 2032 fleet plan is not authorization to fly, and it cannot by itself establish whether any MD-11 is currently operating.

What the decision means for FedEx’s fleet

  • Retirement target: FedEx moved the planned end of MD-11 fleet retirements from 2028 to the end of 2032.
  • New freighters: It exercised options for eight 777Fs, with three deliveries expected in 2026 and five in 2027, subject to possible schedule delays.
  • Capacity rationale: FedEx said the change better matches its air-network capacity to current and anticipated shipment volumes.
  • Individual aircraft: Five MD-11s were slated for permanent retirement in 2026, and the FAA directive separately affected the type’s ability to fly.
