USDA’s April 2026 Crop Progress reports show corn planting was underway, but the official reports reviewed here do not confirm the headline’s specific claim that farmers in six states had started. As of April 12, 5% of corn was planted across 18 selected states; by April 19, the figure was 11%. Those are weekly progress estimates, not final acreage totals.

What USDA reported about corn planting

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported that 5% of corn was planted across 18 selected states as of Sunday, April 12, 2026. The April 13 report put the comparable figure at 3% the previous week, 4% at the same point in 2025, and a 4% average for 2021–2025. USDA Crop Progress, released April 13, 2026.

One week later, 11% of corn was planted across those 18 states as of April 19. The April 20 report listed 5% for the previous week, 11% at the comparable point in 2025, and a 9% five-year average. USDA Crop Progress, released April 20, 2026.

The 18-state group represented 91% of the previous year’s corn acreage. Its aggregate is informative, but it is not a census of every field or every state. The two reports reviewed do not establish which exact six states were meant by the headline.

How to interpret USDA’s weekly progress figures

Crop Progress tracks planting and other seasonal stages, along with crop condition, for selected crops and states. NASS gathers estimates from state reporters, largely extension agents and Farm Service Agency staff. Reporters assess conditions in their areas and respond as of Sunday; USDA then aggregates the responses into weekly state and U.S. tables. USDA NASS survey methodology.

The selected-state tables provide the current week, previous week, prior year, and five-year average. State percentages are most useful when compared for the same reporting week: planting calendars and seasonal timing differ by location, so a percentage alone does not show whether a state is ahead of or behind its usual pace.

Planting progress is different from intended acreage

USDA’s March 31, 2026 Prospective Plantings survey estimated that farmers intended to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2026, down 3% from 2025. That is an acreage-intention estimate, not a count of acres already planted; it should not be conflated with the weekly Crop Progress percentages. USDA 2026 Prospective Plantings.

The figures above describe the April 2026 planting season. USDA’s publication index lists a Crop Progress release dated October 5, 2026, so the April numbers should not be read as current planting activity. USDA Crop Progress publication index.
