SoundCloud’s fan-powered royalties allocate revenue from subscriptions and ads among the artists each listener played that month. Your share depends on that listener’s activity and other factors SoundCloud names—not on a published fixed price per stream. SoundCloud does not provide a public formula that lets artists predict a payout from a stream count alone.
What are fan-powered royalties?
SoundCloud says fan-powered royalties replaced its previous pooled model on April 1, 2021. Under the old model, revenue went into a pool and was allocated according to each artist’s share of platform-wide streams. Under the newer model, revenue associated with a listener’s subscription and ads is allocated among the artists that listener streamed during the month. In practical terms, a listener who spends a larger share of their monthly listening time with one artist can contribute more to that artist’s allocation than a casual listener. SoundCloud’s phrase is: “The more your dedicated fans listen to your music, the more you get paid.” That describes the model’s direction, not a guaranteed payout for any individual fan or play.
How does SoundCloud calculate fan-powered royalties?
SoundCloud lists four factors in its FAQ:
- How much time a fan listens to an artist relative to that fan’s total listening time for the month.
- How many ads the fan viewed.
- Whether the fan has Go+, Go, or DJ.
- SoundCloud’s share of advertising and subscription revenue.
The FAQ does not publish a complete calculation formula or a fixed per-stream rate. A stream count therefore cannot, by itself, establish what an artist will earn. Use the earnings information in your SoundCloud for Artists account for account-specific amounts.

How can an artist qualify and set up monetization?
SoundCloud directs artists to SoundCloud for Artists for direct SoundCloud monetization. Its FAQ names Artist and Artist Pro subscriptions as routes to dashboard access and says there are no specific eligibility requirements for monetizing and distributing with SoundCloud for Artists. That statement does not bypass the current terms, content review, or rights requirements. SoundCloud’s SoundCloud for Artists terms govern use of the service.
Before submitting tracks, make sure you can demonstrate ownership or permission for the material. SoundCloud says third-party beats, stems, or samples may require license documentation; sample-based tracks typically need permission for both the composition and master recording. Some non-exclusive material may not be deliverable to every destination. Keep relevant licenses, beat and collaboration agreements, and accurate contributor details available. Does SoundCloud distribution use the same payout model?
No. SoundCloud for Artists can refer both to monetization of SoundCloud listens and to distributing releases to outside services. Fan-powered allocation applies to SoundCloud’s on-platform listening revenue; plays on Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music are paid under those services’ royalty systems. SoundCloud distributes royalties it receives from distribution partners, but those external services—not SoundCloud’s fan-powered calculation—determine the underlying royalties.

What share does SoundCloud pay, and what fees can apply?
SoundCloud’s payout-fees guidance says that, as of November 2025, it pays a 100% royalty revenue share on earnings from SoundCloud streams and royalties generated on other platforms. That is the revenue share SoundCloud reports; it is not a promise that each stream has a particular value or that no payout costs apply.

When are royalties reported and paid?
SoundCloud says SoundCloud for Artists balances update monthly and royalties typically reach the dashboard with about a two-month delay. Its current payment guidance explains that platforms generally take 30–45 days to report and pay, followed by processing time. Payments are deposited automatically once the balance reaches $25 USD, according to that guidance.
Before a payment can be made, complete payout and tax information, accept the SoundCloud for Artists terms, and enable two-factor authentication. Does fan-powered payment prevent artificial streaming?
SoundCloud’s stated rationale is that the pooled system could be exploited through vanity accounts and bots, while fan-powered allocation ties revenue to listeners’ subscription revenue and ads and pays only artists those listeners played. This is SoundCloud’s explanation of the model’s incentives, not evidence that fraud is eliminated. SoundCloud’s terms prohibit artificial streaming and say it may reset stream counts associated with automated, artificial, or fraudulent activity. Review the current terms before using promotion services that promise plays.
Is SoundCloud Premier the same as SoundCloud for Artists?
Premier is a legacy program, and SoundCloud says it is not accepting new applications. Existing Premier members may remain unless they opt out. Older Premier help articles can describe different payment methods and thresholds—including a $5 threshold—that should not be applied to SoundCloud for Artists generally.
