The actions were limited: Yum Brands pulled fresh onions from select Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants, while Burger King directed a small subset of its restaurants to discard onions from a relevant distribution facility. Those steps did not mean the other chains had confirmed outbreaks.
Which chains pulled onions, and how broad were the actions?
The public reports described temporary, precautionary measures at selected restaurants—not a nationwide removal by every chain. Companies did not disclose a complete list of affected locations or all supplier details.

What caused McDonald’s onion response?
FDA’s final investigation concluded that recalled yellow onions served as slivered onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounders were the likely outbreak source, based on epidemiologic and traceback evidence. Taylor Farms initiated a voluntary recall of yellow onions sent to McDonald’s and other food-service customers on October 22, 2024. FDA said it contacted affected food-service customers directly and that the recalled onions were unlikely to have been sold in grocery stores or directly to consumers. FDA’s final update
The distinction between the evidence and a laboratory confirmation matters. FDA said the E. coli strain linked to illnesses was not found in onion or environmental samples. Some samples tested positive for a different type of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), which did not match the outbreak strain or other clinical illnesses. The likely-source conclusion came from epidemiologic and traceback evidence, not a positive onion sample containing the outbreak strain. FDA; CDC

How the outbreak response unfolded
- October 22, 2024: FDA’s initial notice said the ingredient had not yet been confirmed, although preliminary traceback and distribution information pointed to slivered onions. McDonald’s paused use of that type of onion in affected states, and Taylor Farms initiated its voluntary recall. FDA said McDonald’s diced onions were not implicated. FDA

- December 3, 2024: FDA’s final update recorded 104 reported illnesses in 14 states, 34 hospitalizations and one death. CDC considered the outbreak over and FDA closed its investigation. The last reported illness onset was October 21, 2024. FDA
FDA’s interviews added context, but they are not estimates of an individual customer’s chance of becoming ill: 80 of 81 interviewed people who had eaten at McDonald’s reported eating there in the week before illness; among 75 people who recalled menu items, 63 reported eating an item containing fresh slivered onions. The recall was directed at food-service customers that received the affected onions, not at consumers generally. FDA told those businesses not to sell or serve recalled product and to clean and sanitize surfaces and containers that may have contacted it.
