Copper said it was working to return customer funds, but the available reporting does not establish a final Copper-specific recovery total.
Why did Copper shut down its banking services?
On May 12, 2024, Copper told customers that its deposit accounts and debit cards would be discontinued the next day. CEO Eddie Behringer said Copper had learned the previous week that Synapse was sunsetting its service imminently. Behringer described the accelerated closure in the customer message as an event that had forced Copper to close accounts “much sooner than anticipated,” as quoted by GeekWire on May 21, 2024.
Synapse Financial Technologies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 22, 2024. It provided software connecting fintech platforms that offered banking services to traditional partner banks; it was an intermediary, not the consumer-facing bank in Copper’s arrangement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s case summary describes that role.
What happened to Copper accounts and debit cards?
Copper said it was working with AMG National Trust Bank and Synapse to return customer funds. In May 2024, TechCrunch reported Behringer’s estimate that a small, single-digit percentage of Copper customers had not received their funds before the service closed. That was a company estimate reported at the time, not an independently audited figure; it does not establish how many customers ultimately recovered funds or when.

What did the Synapse shortfall mean for Copper customers?
In 2025, the CFPB said partner banks held $60 million to $90 million less than the total consumer funds reflected in Synapse’s records. That is a Synapse-wide discrepancy, not an estimate of Copper customers’ missing money. The CFPB alleged that Synapse failed to maintain adequate records of consumers’ funds and ensure those records matched partner-bank records. The available sources do not establish a Copper-only loss total or final distribution amount.
It is important to separate Copper’s banking arrangement from other disputes in the Synapse ecosystem. Evolve Bank & Trust said its services agreement with Synapse had expired by its terms in September 2023 and described ledger irregularities and balance inconsistencies in the Synapse Brokerage program. That is Evolve’s account of its role and does not establish the details of Copper’s particular banking arrangement. Read Evolve’s July 12, 2024 statement.
What later enforcement actions did Synapse face?
On September 12, 2025, a stipulated final judgment and order was entered in the CFPB proceeding against Synapse Financial Technologies. The order includes injunctive relief and a $1 civil money penalty. The CFPB said the penalty enables it to access the civil penalty fund for redress; it is not a direct $1 payment to each Copper customer and does not establish a Copper-specific reimbursement. The CFPB case page summarizes the proceeding and order.

Separately, on July 10, 2024, California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation revoked Synapse Credit LLC’s California Financing Law license after the company did not provide requested examination records. Synapse Credit is a subsidiary, and this state lending-license action is distinct from the CFPB proceeding against Synapse Financial Technologies. Details are in the DFPI’s announcement.

A fintech app can be the place customers open an account or contact support without being the bank that holds deposits. A software intermediary may also handle records connecting the fintech and bank. When a service fails, those roles affect who has the account information and who can restore access.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Identify the deposit-holding bank. Check the account agreement and disclosures rather than assuming the app itself is a bank.
- Understand who maintains records. Ask which company keeps transaction and balance ledgers, and how those records are reconciled with the bank’s records.
- Know the support and escalation route. Find out which entity communicates with customers and handles access problems if a fintech or technology provider stops operating.
