Buffalo Airways’ first jet was a Boeing 737-300SF freighter. The airline announced its purchase in April 2022 and took delivery on August 3, 2023, planning to use the aircraft for weekday overnight cargo flights between Edmonton and Yellowknife. That was the announced plan in 2023; Buffalo’s current fleet listing confirms the aircraft’s registration but not its present schedule or service status.
What was Buffalo Airways’ first jet?
It was a used Boeing 737-300SF, a freighter built in 1986. Buffalo Airways announced the purchase in April 2022 and officially took delivery on August 3, 2023. The aircraft came from European Aviation Group and had previously been operated by Swiftair, according to Skies Magazine’s August 8, 2023 report.
The delivery arrived later than initially anticipated: the aircraft had been expected in summer 2022, but maintenance and regulatory delays pushed the timeline back. In Bournemouth, England, it underwent repairs and received new engines and landing gear. After reaching Edmonton, it was scheduled for avionics work before Canadian registration and entry into service.
Where did Buffalo Airways’ 737 fly?
Before delivery, the aircraft was registered 2-ESKA. It ferried from Bournemouth on August 2, 2023, stopping in Keflavík, Iceland, and Iqaluit, Nunavut, before landing in Edmonton at 1:45 p.m. local time on August 3. The delivery route and intended base were reported by ch-aviation.

Buffalo planned to base the aircraft in Edmonton for weekday overnight freight flights to Yellowknife. The route was intended to move cargo between larger airports, supporting next-day delivery demand. This is a description of the 2023 plan, not confirmation of the aircraft’s route or operations in 2026.
Why did Buffalo Airways buy a 737 freighter?
The jet added capacity for overnight cargo moving between major paved airports; it was not intended to replace Buffalo’s turboprops or its older aircraft. The airline has also served remote northern communities where cargo moves onward from paved airports to smaller or gravel-runway destinations. Different aircraft therefore support different parts of the freight network.

Buffalo general manager Mikey McBryan told Skies Magazine that the 737 could carry three times the nightly payload of a C-46 cargo aircraft. The same report attributed 60 to 75 percent of Buffalo’s nightly cargo volume to its courier company, Buffalo Air Express, with the remaining freight tied to logistics firms including FedEx, UPS and DHL. These are figures attributed to the general manager in 2023 reporting, not independently measured results.

Contemporary reports identified the aircraft as 2-ESKA and gave its manufacturer serial number as 23512; C-FBAE was the planned Canadian registration. Buffalo Airways’ official fleet page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists one Boeing 737-300SF registered C-FBAE. That listing corroborates the registration, but does not establish a current route schedule, utilization, or operating status.
