The Ferrari behind the $16.4 million headline was a 1957 250 Testa Rossa Prototype, chassis 0666 TR. Gooding & Company sold it at Pebble Beach in 2011 for exactly $16,390,000, a result the auction house called a new worldwide record for a car sold at auction at the time.
Which Ferrari sold for $16.4 million?
Gooding’s 2011 lot record identifies the car as chassis 0666 TR, the first 250 Testa Rossa built and a former Scuderia Ferrari team car. The $16.4 million headline rounds the reported sale price of $16,390,000.
Gooding described the car as having raced internationally for eight years at major venues and been driven by leading motor-sport names. Its listing also noted a continuous ownership history from new, restoration by Dennison International, a first-in-class award at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, presentation in 1958 Le Mans NART livery, extensive documentation, a race engine and spares, documentation by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, and Ferrari Classiche certification. These are details reported by the auction house, not independent authentication.

Was it really the most expensive car sold at auction?
It was described as a world auction record when it sold in 2011—not a record that still stands. In an August 23, 2011 release, Gooding & Company said the sale “command[ed] the new worldwide record for a car sold at auction.” That statement records the auction house’s characterization at the time.
The record was later surpassed. RM Sotheby’s reported that a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3413 GT, sold for $48,405,000 in 2018, exceeding the previous auction record by more than $10 million. That later result establishes that the 2011 mark no longer held; the records cited here do not establish a comprehensive ranking as of October 8, 2026.

Is this the same Testa Rossa that sold in 2009?
No. The two sales involved different 1957 cars, different chassis numbers, different auction years, and different currencies.

The $16.4 million figure is a rounded historical auction result for one identified car.
