Dr Rob Wilson did not claim Lionel Messi would join Wrexham. In a 15 April 2024 interview, the football finance expert compared Wrexham’s growing profile and club narrative with Inter Miami’s, where David Beckham’s involvement and Messi’s arrival had helped draw attention. His separate suggestion that Wrexham might recruit Premier League players after reaching League One was a conditional forecast, not a confirmed transfer plan.
Why did Wilson mention Messi and Inter Miami?
GOAL reported on 15 April 2024 that Wilson saw a parallel between the stories the two clubs were building. He said: “Wrexham have a very similar story to Inter Miami. It’s different in terms of league and style of player but the story ostensibly is the same and because they’re creating a narrative.” GOAL’s report presented Messi as part of the Inter Miami comparison—not as a player linked with Wrexham.
The comparison was about profile and storytelling, not a claim that the clubs were alike in every sporting or financial respect. Wilson explicitly distinguished their leagues and the styles of players involved. Inter Miami’s public story included Beckham’s involvement and Messi’s arrival; the report did not provide figures measuring either club’s commercial impact.
What was the Wrexham recruitment claim?
Wilson also forecast that Wrexham could look at Premier League players after reaching League One, particularly players nearing retirement. GOAL quoted him saying: “Wrexham could target Premier League players when they’re in League One, especially players that are nearing retirement, but it will come down to Profit and Sustainability Rules.” SportBible’s report from the same day corroborated that financial and competitive conditions mattered and identified Wilson as Professor of Economics at Sheffield Business School.

This was a 2024 possibility, not evidence of a confirmed recruitment policy, a named target, or a completed signing. Wilson’s point was conditional: any potential recruits would have to fit the applicable financial rules and be capable of competing successfully in the division. The contemporary reports establish what he said then; they do not show whether the forecast later came true.
