Fastest New Cars Under $40,000 in 2025: 0–60 Times and Price Checks

The Mustang EcoBoost and Elantra N lead the cited 0–60 tests, but different test configurations complicate a definitive ranking. Compare prices and practical alternatives.

If “fastest” means quickest tested 0–60 mph acceleration, the 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost and Hyundai Elantra N are the leaders among the cars in the available tests. The evidence does not establish a definitive winner: publications tested different configurations, and the Mustang’s reported times differ substantially. Prices below are starting-price context, not guaranteed out-the-door quotes; check the exact trim and local listing before treating it as under $40,000.

How fast are the quickest new cars under $40,000?

This comparison ranks reported 0–60 mph acceleration, not top speed or lap times. These are results from specific publications and test configurations, not promises for every car bearing the same model name. The two Mustang results illustrate why a single cross-publication ranking would be misleading.

2025 model Reported 0–60 mph Price context Body style and use
Ford Mustang EcoBoost 4.5 seconds in Car and Driver’s test; 5.6 seconds in Edmunds’ tested 10-speed automatic configuration, as reported in the AP-carried roundup. These are separate results, not a range guaranteed for every trim. $33,515 starting price for the coupe in the AP/Edmunds roundup; listed roundup prices include destination. Rear-drive coupe; the sources emphasize its pony-car character and acceleration rather than establishing a broad practicality ranking.
Hyundai Elantra N 4.8 seconds in Car and Driver’s instrumented automatic test. Hyundai’s page says MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, and license; check the selected trim’s displayed price and local availability. Four-door performance sedan.
Volkswagen Golf GTI 5.9 seconds, according to Edmunds’ result in the AP-carried roundup. $33,640 starting MSRP in that roundup; its listed prices include destination. Front-wheel-drive hatchback with a seven-speed automatic for 2025; the roundup describes a comfortable cabin and generous cargo room for its size.
Subaru BRZ / Toyota GR86 About 6 seconds with a manual transmission, according to Edmunds’ report in the AP-carried roundup. GR86: $31,135; BRZ: $32,380 in the roundup, with destination included. Related rear-wheel-drive coupes, offered with manual and automatic choices; the roundup highlights their low center of gravity and balanced handling.
Mazda MX-5 Miata 6.4 seconds for Edmunds’ tested manual car, as reported in the AP-carried roundup. $30,715 starting price in that roundup; listed prices include destination. Two-seat roadster focused on low weight, nimble handling, and an easy-to-lower roof; it is not as quick in a straight line as the Mustang or Elantra N in the cited results.
Subaru WRX Car and Driver lists 5.6 seconds for a 2025 manual TS and 5.4 seconds for a 2022 CVT GT. Those are different years and trims, not a like-for-like 2025 comparison. The cited page does not establish that every 2025 trim stays below $40,000; verify the exact trim’s complete price. Consider it as an AWD alternative only if the specific 2025 trim and its price meet the budget.

Sources: Car and Driver’s 2025 Mustang review, Car and Driver’s 2025 Elantra N review, the AP-carried 2025 Edmunds roundup, Car and Driver’s 2025 WRX page, and Hyundai’s 2025 Elantra N page.

Which car is quickest in the cited tests?

Ford Mustang EcoBoost: quickest result, with a significant test discrepancy

Car and Driver reports 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds for the 2025 Mustang EcoBoost. Edmunds, in the 2025 roundup carried by AP, reports 5.6 seconds for its tested 10-speed automatic configuration, along with 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Because these results differ materially, neither should be treated as a universal time for every EcoBoost trim. The sources do not provide a standardized cross-publication retest that resolves the difference.

Hyundai Elantra N: close behind in an instrumented automatic test

Car and Driver recorded 4.8 seconds to 60 mph in its instrumented automatic test of the 2025 Elantra N. Hyundai describes the car as a performance sedan and notes that its summer tires may be noisier when ambient temperatures are below 7°C. That tire note is relevant to everyday use, particularly for buyers driving in colder conditions.

What do the other under-$40,000 performance choices offer?

Golf GTI: a quick hatchback with everyday cargo utility

The 2025 Golf GTI’s reported 5.9-second 0–60 time trails the two leading results cited above, but it brings hatchback packaging. The AP-carried Edmunds roundup reports 241 hp and describes a comfortable cabin with generous cargo space for the car’s size. It says 2025 versions use front-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic.

BRZ and GR86: prioritize rear-drive coupe handling

Edmunds reports about 6 seconds to 60 mph for manual versions of the BRZ and GR86; both are rated at 228 hp in the roundup. These related rear-wheel-drive coupes offer manual and automatic choices. The roundup emphasizes their low center of gravity and balanced handling, rather than class-leading acceleration.

MX-5 Miata: choose the roadster experience, not the quickest launch

Edmunds measured a manual Miata at 6.4 seconds to 60 mph. Its case is different from the Mustang’s: the roundup highlights its light weight, nimble handling, and roof that lowers easily. The cited test does not put it in the same straight-line acceleration tier as the Mustang EcoBoost or Elantra N.

WRX: an AWD option that needs a trim-level price check

Car and Driver’s 2025 WRX page includes a 5.6-second result for a 2025 manual TS, but its 5.4-second CVT GT figure is for a 2022 car. Those times cannot establish a direct 2025 trim comparison. The cited material also does not establish that every 2025 WRX trim fits below the price limit, so check the exact car’s price before including it in a sub-$40,000 shortlist.

Does “under $40,000” mean the car will cost less than $40,000?

No. The AP-carried Edmunds roundup says its listed prices include destination fees. Hyundai’s Elantra N page, by contrast, states that MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, and license. Neither figure is automatically an out-the-door price. The final amount can also change with options, dealer adjustments, taxes, title and registration costs, and the availability of a particular trim.

Before comparing offers, confirm the model year and trim, whether destination is included, and the full price in your area. This matters especially when a model’s listed MSRP excludes freight or when the exact trim’s budget eligibility has not been established by the cited price source.

How to choose between the fastest options

  • For the quickest cited result: compare the Mustang EcoBoost and Elantra N, keeping each acceleration time attached to its publication and test configuration.
  • For a hatchback and cargo flexibility: consider the Golf GTI, whose cited roundup describes a comfortable cabin and generous cargo space for its size.
  • For a rear-drive coupe: compare the BRZ and GR86, whose cited appeal is balanced handling as well as available manual and automatic transmissions.
  • For open-air driving: the Miata’s roadster layout and nimble-handling emphasis are more relevant than its slower cited 0–60 result.
  • For all-wheel drive: investigate the exact WRX trim, and verify that its full price stays below the ceiling.

Acceleration testing can vary with vehicle configuration, tires, surface, weather, and procedure. The cited material does not provide a common test protocol across publications, so small differences in listed times should not be read as a controlled head-to-head result.
