October feeder cattle futures fell $9.25 per hundredweight (cwt) to $349.93 at the close on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, according to Successful Farming. Karl Setzer of Consus Ag Consulting attributed the cattle-market weakness to softer cash trade, including lower feeder and calf auction prices. The report gives his interpretation, not proof that cash prices were the sole cause.
What happened at the close on Sept. 9?
Successful Farming’s report, by Cassidy Walter and updated Sept. 9, 2025, said October feeder cattle futures closed down $9.25 at $349.93 per cwt. It also reported October live cattle down $5.63 at $230.18 per cwt, while lean hogs rose 98 cents to $96.13 per cwt. The report labels the contracts October but does not specify a contract year.
The close figures were reported in a section published at 3:44 p.m. CT. They differ from the report’s morning snapshot, which showed feeder cattle down $6.53 at $352.65 per cwt as of a 9:30 a.m. CT update published at 9:47 a.m. CT. The close figures describe the day’s final reported result, not current market prices.
Why did feeder cattle futures fall?
Setzer, a partner at Consus Ag Consulting, said cattle futures posted sharp losses “on the heels of a softening cash market.” He described feeder auction sales as steady to $4 lower and calf sales as $2 to $6 lower. In his view, cash-market weakness had helped lead futures higher earlier and was now weighing on them. Those auction changes are the market context he cited; the report does not establish them as the only cause of the futures decline.

What production conditions did Setzer cite?
Setzer said the annual fall run of calves had started and was being watched closely. He also described pasture conditions as favorable, with wheat being seeded into ample soil moisture. But he said cheap feed grain made placing feeders in feedlots more economical than placing them on pasture. These were his observations about conditions at the time, not a current assessment.

The livestock markets were mixed rather than uniformly lower. Feeder and live cattle futures fell, while lean hog futures advanced. The feeder decline was larger than the live cattle decline in dollars per cwt, but those quoted price changes do not by themselves compare contract exposure or total contract value.
| Market reported | Direction and change | Reported close |
