There is no weekday that is reliably cheapest for every flight. Some historical U.S. fare data favor Monday through Wednesday departures, while a separate Expedia summary ranks Friday cheapest overall. The practical answer is to compare flexible dates for your route—not assume Tuesday is always the bargain day. Also distinguish the day you fly from the day you buy: the evidence does not support waiting for a particular weekday to book.
What are the cheapest days of the week to fly?
It depends on the route and on which fares a study measured. Google’s 2024 analysis of historical U.S. fares found that Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday departures averaged 13% less than Friday, Saturday, or Sunday departures. For domestic trips, Google reported potential weekday savings of 20% when international trips were excluded. These are averages from Google’s dataset, not guaranteed savings on a specific itinerary. A separate ranking points elsewhere: Expedia’s 2026 summary says Friday was the cheapest weekday to fly overall, while Tuesday was cheapest for domestic departures. Its stated booking data cover Expedia.com purchases from December 2024 through November 2025. The apparent disagreement is a reason to check your own dates, not a reason to choose one publisher’s weekday as a universal rule.

Does the day you book matter?
Buying a ticket on Tuesday is not the same as flying on Tuesday. Google’s 2024 summary found just a 1.3% spread between the cheapest and most expensive weekdays to book in its analysis—far smaller than its reported departure-day difference. That does not mean fares never change after you search. Prices can move from day to day; the findings simply do not establish a dependable purchase weekday that will get every traveler a lower fare.

Why do the weekday rankings differ?
The studies use different fare collections, dates, route mixes, and trip populations. They describe patterns in observed prices; they do not prove that a particular weekday causes lower fares.
Google’s 2024 comparison
Google analyzed average round-trip fares for trips lasting 6–9 days or 13–16 days, departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. Its observation periods were August 1 through December 31, 2019, and January 1, 2021, through August 1, 2024; the period between them was omitted. Expedia’s 2026 summary
Expedia’s reported comparison uses Expedia.com booking data from December 2024 through November 2025. That is a different source and observation period from Google’s historical fare analysis. Neither set of averages demonstrates a cause such as lower airline operating costs on one day or a universal change in business-traveler demand. The evidence supports comparison, not a guaranteed pricing mechanism.

How to find the lowest fare for your itinerary
- Start with your route and trip length. Search the actual origin, destination, and intended duration; a broad weekday average cannot tell you which specific flight is cheapest.
- Open a flexible-date calendar or date grid. Compare nearby departure and return dates together, rather than shifting only the outbound flight and overlooking the total round trip.
- Compare the full itinerary. Check the total fare and the flights that fit your needs before treating a lower displayed price as a saving.
- Track fares if your dates are not fixed. Google’s flight-search guidance documents date-grid, price-graph, and fare-tracking features. Use them to monitor changes instead of relying on a supposed Tuesday booking rule. Google’s flexible-date and fare-tracking guidance
What the historical findings can—and cannot—tell you
- They can suggest dates worth checking. Google’s U.S. analysis favored Monday–Wednesday departures on average; Expedia’s reported 2026 ranking favored Friday overall and Tuesday for domestic departures.
- They cannot promise an individual saving. A route, market, itinerary, and search date may produce a different result from either average.
- They do not establish a best day to purchase. Google’s reported booking-weekday spread was small, and its earlier advice rejects a reliable Tuesday-buying rule.
- They do not explain why a fare differs. The cited comparisons show observed differences, not a proven causal mechanism.
