The $12.7 billion figure is a federal court order for monetary relief—not a single payout pool that every FTX customer receives equally. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said the August 2024 consent order against FTX Trading Ltd. and Alameda Research LLC required $8.7 billion in restitution and $4 billion in disgorgement. Separately, FTX’s Chapter 11 plan governs distributions to creditors with allowed claims. The latest located company update scheduled a fifth distribution to begin July 31, 2026, but does not independently establish that individual creditors received it.
What the $12.7 billion order required
On August 8, 2024, the CFTC announced that the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York had entered a consent order requiring FTX Trading Ltd. and Alameda Research LLC to provide $12.7 billion in monetary relief for FTX customers and victims of fraud. The amount comprised $8.7 billion in restitution and $4 billion in disgorgement. The CFTC’s announcement describes the order and its terms.
In the agency’s account of the court’s findings, FTX made material misrepresentations and omissions, while customer funds were commingled and misappropriated despite representations about custody and segregation of customer assets. CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam said in the August 8, 2024 release: “FTX used age-old tactics to create an illusion that it was a safe and secure place to access crypto markets.”
The CFTC said disgorgement payments would further compensate victims through a supplemental remission fund described in FTX’s proposed reorganization plan. That connection does not make the CFTC order the full set of rules for each creditor’s bankruptcy distribution.

How the order differs from FTX bankruptcy payouts
The consent order and the Chapter 11 plan are distinct legal mechanisms. The order sets monetary relief required of FTX and Alameda; the bankruptcy plan governs distributions by the estate to holders of allowed claims. A claim’s allowed amount and applicable plan requirements—not a simple division of $12.7 billion among all customers—determine an individual creditor’s distribution.
| Figure or mechanism | What it means | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| $12.7 billion | $8.7 billion restitution plus $4 billion disgorgement for FTX customers and fraud victims | Monetary relief required by the August 2024 consent order, as announced by the CFTC |
| $14.7 billion to $16.5 billion | FTX’s estimate of property collected, converted to cash and available for distribution under its Chapter 11 plan | FTX projection announced in October 2024, not a final audited payment total |
| Approximately 119% for 98% of creditors by number | FTX’s expected recovery relative to allowed claim amounts | FTX’s October 2024 expectation, subject to the plan’s terms and distribution requirements |
FTX announced that its Chapter 11 plan was confirmed on October 7, 2024. Its recovery estimates are based on allowed claims under the plan; they are not a comparison with what customers’ crypto assets might have been worth had they remained invested through the exchange’s collapse. The confirmation announcement and its qualifications are on FTX’s plan announcement.

What FTX said about the fifth distribution
In an announcement dated July 17, 2026, FTX said an approximately $900 million fifth distribution was scheduled to commence July 31, 2026. The company listed incremental and cumulative percentages for eligible allowed claims:
| Claim class | Incremental distribution announced | Cumulative distribution announced |
|---|---|---|
| Class 5A, Dotcom customer entitlement claims | 9% | 105% |
| Class 5B, U.S. customer entitlement claims | 5% | 105% |
| Class 6A, general unsecured claims, and Class 6B, digital asset loan claims | 3% | 103% |
| Class 7, Convenience Claims | Not stated as an incremental percentage | 120% |
These percentages are stated against allowed claims under the plan, not the market value of crypto customers may have expected to retain. FTX said class totals could differ slightly due to rounding. The announcement said the fifth distribution covered holders of allowed claims in Convenience and Non-Convenience Classes who completed prerequisites by the June 16, 2026 record date. FTX said eligible creditors should expect transfers from their selected service provider within one to three business days after July 31, 2026. That is the company’s stated schedule, not independent confirmation that transfers were completed or reached individual recipients.
