If a car listing on Facebook or Instagram looks convincing, verify the seller outside the platform before you pay. Scammers can clone real dealership websites and copy their logos, vehicle listings, and photos. Ask to see the actual car and dealership, arrange an independent inspection if you cannot visit, and walk away if the seller requires an upfront wire transfer only.
Is a car listing on Facebook or Instagram real?
A social-media post is a lead to investigate, not proof that the seller owns the car or represents a legitimate dealer. A polished profile, detailed sales process, copied vehicle photos, or reassuring return policy can all be part of a scam. The FTC’s September 2026 consumer alert describes scammers cloning real dealership websites, including their logos, listings, and photos, to collect payment for cars they never deliver. The alert documents dealership impersonation; it does not establish that every such scam begins on Facebook or Instagram. FTC: Scammers are spoofing car dealership websites.
Facebook Marketplace ratings do not settle the question either: a Meta Help Center search result says ratings do not verify that reviewers bought or used the item or service. The help page was login-gated when accessed, so treat that detail as limited platform guidance, not proof about a particular seller. Meta Help Center: Marketplace.
Warning signs to take seriously
- The seller cannot be verified through the dealer’s real contact details. A scammer may be impersonating a real dealership whose genuine reviews and reputation are unrelated to the listing.
- You are not allowed to see the car or dealership. The FTC advises asking to see both in person. If distance makes that impractical, ask whether an independent mobile inspection is allowed; refusal is a reason to reconsider the purchase.
- The seller demands an upfront wire transfer and will accept no other payment method. The FTC says to walk away from this demand.
- The offer relies on urgency or a hard-luck explanation. An IC3 report published in 2015 described a historical auto-fraud pattern involving below-market prices, sellers claiming they needed to sell because of relocation or military deployment, refusal to meet or allow an inspection, and pressure to wire funds to a third-party agent. The fraudster kept the money and did not deliver the vehicle. This is a documented historical pattern, not a current measure of prevalence on either platform. What to check before you pay
- Find the dealership independently. Search the dealer’s name with terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint,” then locate its contact information separately from the ad or message. Call or contact the dealership using those details and ask whether it is selling the specific vehicle. Positive reviews alone are not enough: an impersonator can use the name of a real dealer with a genuine reputation.
- Confirm the vehicle and terms directly. Ask the independently verified dealership to confirm the car, advertised price, and sale terms. Do not rely on links, phone numbers, or payment instructions supplied only by the social-media seller.
- See the actual car and dealership. Ask to visit in person. If you cannot travel, ask whether the seller will allow an independent mobile inspection. A refusal is a reason to walk away.
- Reject a wire-transfer-only upfront demand. Do not send money under that condition; the FTC’s advice is to walk away.
These checks help distinguish a social-media lead from an independently verified dealership offer. None of a seller’s ratings, story, or copied materials substitutes for confirming the car and seller directly.

What the available numbers do—and do not—show
The FTC reported that U.S. consumers reported $2.1 billion in losses to scams that started on social media in 2025, and that Facebook had the greatest reported social-media scam losses of any platform that year. These are broad social-media scam figures, not totals for vehicle fraud, Facebook Marketplace car listings, or Instagram car ads. The FTC’s April 2026 analysis says the reports were not collected during the 2025 government shutdown and cautions that most scams are not reported. FTC: Reported losses to scams on social media eight times higher than in 2020.
The cited sources do not establish a current Facebook- or Instagram-specific car-scam rate, loss total, or breakdown by scam type. The IC3 example is from complaints reported in 2014 and published in 2015; use it as a historical warning pattern, not a current platform statistic.

How to report a suspected car scam
If you suspect fraud or have lost money, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the listing, seller or dealer details, messages, and payment information you have.
