IDC estimates reported by The Verge put the Deck at all of the tracked segment’s shipments in 2022, more than half in 2023, and 48 percent in 2024. Those figures describe four product families—not every handheld gaming device—and are estimates, not Valve’s official lifetime sales total.
What the shipment estimates show
The comparison covered Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw product families. IDC’s combined shipment estimates, as reported by The Verge in February 2025, show a sharp rise in the segment in 2023 followed by a decline in 2024.

The yearly totals and market shares are estimates attributed to IDC by The Verge. The 2025 figure is specifically a forecast in that article. The reported comparison excludes Chinese manufacturers including GPD, Ayaneo, and OneXPlayer, so the percentages should not be read as Steam Deck’s share of all handheld gaming devices.
How many Steam Decks had Valve sold?
The Verge calculated from IDC’s estimates and shares that Valve had shipped upwards of 3.7 million Steam Decks through 2024, and might have passed four million by February 2025. These are analyst-derived shipment estimates, not a precise official lifetime sales figure from Valve. The Verge reported that Valve had described sales as “multiple millions” in November 2023, but that wording does not establish an exact total.

PCWorld likewise reported a roughly six-million combined total for the tracked segment through 2024 and its projected 2025 shipments, but its February 2025 story relied on the same IDC estimates rather than providing independent confirmation. Its report is useful corroboration of what was published, not a separate official Steam Deck count: PCWorld’s report.
What “dominated” means—and what it does not
Within this four-family shipment comparison, the word fits the historical record: Steam Deck represented the entire tracked volume in 2022, more than half in 2023, and nearly half in 2024. The 2024 figure matters: 48 percent made it the largest of the named platforms, but not a majority holder.

The estimates do not establish the Deck’s share of every handheld PC or of all portable gaming devices. The exclusion of Chinese vendors leaves out other products, and shipment estimates are not the same as retail sell-through, active users, or revenue. AMD gaming marketing chief Frank Azor characterized the category’s emergence as “This didn’t exist three years ago; we went from nothing, zero, to incremental category creation in the millions of units.” That is an industry executive’s description, not a neutral measurement of the market.
The category’s growth was uneven
IDC’s reported combined total rose from 1.62 million units in 2022 to 2.867 million in 2023, then fell to 1.485 million in 2024. The data therefore supports the claim that handheld gaming PCs had become a measurable product category, but not a story of uninterrupted year-over-year shipment growth.

The Verge’s February 2025 article put 2025 shipments at a forecast of 1.926 million across the four families. The cited reporting does not establish the final 2025 result, so that projection should not be treated as an actual shipment total.

In July 2026, Ars Technica reported on a rough model from Boiling Steam that inferred weekly Steam Deck unit sales from Steam revenue-chart rankings and assumptions about average selling price. The model suggested an approximately 80 percent fall relative to a 2025 baseline after a May 2026 price change. Ars stressed that the estimate had substantial wiggle room and that supply constraints could also affect chart position. It is speculative context, not a confirmed sales report or a revision of the historical IDC shipment shares: Ars Technica’s account.

- The Deck led the tracked group: the reported shares were all tracked shipments in 2022, upwards of 50 percent in 2023, and 48 percent in 2024.
- The scope is limited: GPD, Ayaneo, OneXPlayer, and other makers outside the four-family comparison are not included.
- The lifetime total is not official: the 3.7-million-plus estimate and possible four-million milestone were calculated from market estimates and shares.
- The 2025 number was a projection: the February 2025 article did not provide a final 2025 tally.
