FAA’s O’Hare Flight Limits Could Mean Schedule Cuts for American and United

The FAA’s O’Hare limit may lead to schedule changes for American and United, but early estimates and filed schedule reductions are not final cancellation counts.

The FAA’s temporary limit at Chicago O’Hare (ORD) may mean fewer scheduled flights for American and United during summer 2026, but it is not a blanket ban on either airline. The agency capped O’Hare at 2,708 daily operations from May 17 through October 24, 2026. Early cut estimates and later schedule filings point to changes, but neither establishes how many flights will ultimately be canceled or how many passengers will be affected.

What the FAA limited at O’Hare

The Federal Aviation Administration set a limit of 2,708 daily operations at O’Hare from May 17 through October 24, 2026. An operation is an arrival or a departure, so the limit covers airport movements rather than a set number of round trips. The FAA’s April 16 announcement said peak-day Summer 2026 schedules had exceeded 3,080 flights, a 14.9% increase over Summer 2025.

The FAA described construction-related taxiway closures, constrained gate capacity and surface limitations as reasons the airport could not reliably handle the scheduled volume. It said fewer than 60% of arrivals and departures were on time at O’Hare the previous summer. The final order used approved Summer 2025 schedules as the allocation baseline; the order establishing scheduling limits explains the agency’s allocation rationale and airport constraints.

Calling the measure a scheduling or operating limit is more precise than calling it a flight ban. The FAA’s order constrains the volume of scheduled operations at O’Hare; it does not prohibit American or United from flying there.

What American and United have said or changed

The reported figures refer to different things and should not be treated as a like-for-like count of cancellations.

Carrier and report Reported figure What it measures
American, early estimate reported April 16, 2026 Up to 40 daily arrivals and departures American’s estimate of the schedule reductions it might need to make, reported by the Associated Press; not a final tally of canceled flights.
United, early estimate reported April 16, 2026 More than 200 daily operations American’s estimate of what United might need to cut, as reported by AP. United did not provide its own estimate in that report.
United, later schedule analysis published May 5, 2026 9,088 fewer planned June–August departures than in earlier filings; a 7.6% reduction Aviation Week’s comparison of filed schedules, citing OAG Schedules Analyser data—not a count of flights actually canceled or operated.

The May 5 Aviation Week analysis also reported that United’s revised June–August schedule remained above its year-earlier level: 17.1% more departures and 15.9% more seats than the same period in 2025. Aviation Week reported smaller reductions in filed schedules for American and Delta, but the figures above do not establish a final, comparable count of realized cancellations for all three carriers.

Why the figures are not a final cancellation count

The early American estimates were projections made when the FAA announced the limit. The later United figures compare planned departures in successive schedule filings for June through August. They differ in timing, measurement and unit: a daily estimate of arrivals and departures is not directly comparable to a seasonal count of planned departures. Neither report gives a definitive total of flights that were ultimately canceled through the season.

Schedules can also change after a filing. The FAA order runs through October 24, 2026, but that end date does not guarantee that a specific flight will operate as originally booked. The schedule data describe planned service, not a passenger’s individual itinerary.

What to do if you have an O’Hare booking

  1. Check the airline’s current itinerary. Use the carrier’s app or website and look for schedule-change notifications tied to your reservation.
  2. Review the revised details if anything changes. Confirm the departure time, airport, connection and any replacement flight shown by the airline.
  3. Contact the carrier if the new itinerary does not work. Ask what options are available for your booking; the FAA order itself does not specify passenger-specific rebooking arrangements.

Do not infer that your flight is canceled from the airport-wide limit or from a published schedule reduction alone. Your carrier’s current reservation information is the relevant source for your trip.
