Not literally, according to the available polling. Gallup’s July 2025 survey found that 61% of U.S. adults viewed Elon Musk unfavorably and 33% favorably—the lowest net favorability among the 14 public figures Gallup asked about. But the poll measured favorability, not hatred, and its ranking applies only to those 14 people.
What does “most hated” mean in the polling?
“Most hated person in America” is a headline, not a survey finding. Gallup asked respondents whether their opinions of named figures were favorable or unfavorable. Its July 2025 results put Musk at a net favorability of minus 28 points: 33% favorable minus 61% unfavorable. That was the lowest net score in Gallup’s comparison of 14 U.S. and global figures—not a ranking of every person in America or every public figure.
Gallup’s topline also recorded 3% who had no opinion of Musk and 3% who had never heard of him. The result supports saying Musk was the least favorably rated in that particular comparison; it does not establish that he was the person Americans hated most. Gallup’s July 2025 public-release data covers interviews conducted July 7–21, 2025.
Do other polls also find unfavorable views of Musk?
Yes. Two other 2025 surveys also found that more Americans viewed Musk negatively than positively, though their results should be read as separate snapshots rather than combined into a single trendline.

| Pew Research Center | Jan. 27–Feb. 2, 2025: 54% unfavorable, 42% favorable | Pew surveyed 5,086 U.S. adults through its American Trends Panel. In addition, 36% said their view was very unfavorable and 11% very favorable. Pew’s Musk and Zuckerberg findings |
| AP-NORC | June 5–9, 2025: 57% had an unfavorable impression | The survey interviewed 1,158 adults online or by telephone through NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak panel. Its stated overall margin of sampling error was ±4.0 percentage points. AP-NORC’s survey summary |

The polls differ in dates, question wording, samples, and methods. Gallup and Pew report favorable or unfavorable views; AP-NORC reports impressions. None of the measures directly asks whether respondents hate Musk. The numbers show that unfavorable views were widespread across these surveys, not that one poll’s percentage can be directly compared with another as a precise measure of changing sentiment.
How sharply do views differ by political party?
The national averages conceal a pronounced partisan split. In Pew’s January–February 2025 survey, 73% of Republicans viewed Musk favorably and 24% unfavorably. Among Democrats, 12% viewed him favorably and 85% unfavorably. Pew reported similar polarization in its February 7, 2025 report on views of the new administration and political leaders. Gallup’s July 2025 topline showed the same broad divide: 67% favorable among Republicans and 92% unfavorable among Democrats. That gap helps explain how Musk could draw substantial support from one group while also receiving a low overall net favorability score.

The strongest evidence-based version of the headline is narrow: in Gallup’s July 2025 survey, Musk had the lowest net favorability among the 14 figures Gallup asked about. Pew and AP-NORC also found majority-unfavorable views in their 2025 surveys, but they asked about him at different times and used different measures and survey designs. These results describe public opinion at specific points in 2025; they do not prove that Musk is literally America’s most hated person or establish a permanent ranking.
