That is a result from a specific test published ahead of Easter 2024—not a current ranking or a guarantee that every shopper will prefer them.
What were the best hot cross buns in 2024?
CHOICE’s release, updated 21 March 2024, reported results for 29 hot cross buns from Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Aldi, Bakers Delight and Costco. Within the traditional fruit category, the three highest-ranked products were:

The listed prices are from the 2024 test release and should not be treated as current. CHOICE included 14 traditional fruit varieties in the test. CHOICE’s 2024 results and test details do not establish whether the winning product is still stocked or whether its recipe has changed since testing.
How did CHOICE assess the buns?
CHOICE said its experts blind-tested the buns in its kitchen and assessed flavour, appearance, aroma and texture. The release identified food consultant Brigid Treloar, pastry chef and bakery competition judge Ian Huntley, and CHOICE verifier and pastry chef Jane Bardell among the panel. It attributed the first-place result and toasted-aroma observation to “Serrels”; the release does not give that person’s full name or role.

What stood out about the winning bun?
CHOICE described the Luxurious Richly Fruited bun as soft, pleasantly chewy and especially pleasant-smelling when toasted. The release also reported that it had the highest fruit percentage in the test, at 30%. Those are test-era observations and product details, not independently verified current specifications.
A blind panel’s ranking is useful for comparing the products tested, but it cannot establish a universal favourite: individual preferences differ, and the result applies to the versions assessed in 2024.
