The takeover of Sheffield Wednesday was completed in May 2026, but the available sources do not verify any comments by Viv Anderson about the deal. An interview with Anderson published in February 2026 covered the Steel City derby, not the club’s ownership. Here is what is confirmed about the takeover—and what cannot responsibly be attributed to Anderson.
What did Viv Anderson say about the takeover?
No takeover comments by Anderson are established in the available sources. The interview located, published by Vital Football on 20 February 2026, focused on the upcoming Steel City derby and Anderson’s memories of the fixture. His prediction was: “If you could come away with a draw, it’d be a fantastic result. And a win, well, it’d be brilliant.” That remark concerns the derby, not the ownership change. Vital Football’s interview therefore cannot substantiate the takeover angle in the headline.
Anderson’s connection to Wednesday is genuine: he played for the club and earned 30 senior England caps. The People’s History Museum identifies him as the first Black player to represent England’s senior team; the BBC also records his 30 caps and Wednesday career. That background explains why his perspective may interest supporters, but it does not establish what he thinks of the 2026 takeover. People’s History Museum; BBC profile.
What is confirmed about Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover?
The verified sequence is clear: Wednesday entered administration in October 2025, Arise Capital Partners LLC became preferred bidder in March 2026, and the asset transfer was completed by 2 May 2026.

- 24 October 2025: The English Football League said the club and the company owning Hillsborough had taken steps to appoint administrators. Under the regulations then in force, administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction. This is historical context, not the club’s current status. EFL statement.
- 10 March 2026: A club sale-process update named Arise Capital Partners LLC as preferred bidder after the previous preferred bidder withdrew. The consortium members named were David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin. Sheffield Wednesday update.
- 2 May 2026: The EFL confirmed that the asset-transfer agreement had been concluded, Wednesday met league requirements and the club was no longer regarded as being in administration. The consortium was led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. EFL confirmation.
What changed after completion?
The May 2026 EFL statement said Wednesday would remain subject to a budget restriction for two seasons and could register players in accordance with an agreed business plan. Those conditions are part of the league’s post-completion framework; they do not mean the club remained in administration. EFL chief executive Trevor Birch described the period around the administration and its resolution as “an extremely testing time” for the club and those associated with it, particularly players, staff and supporters. EFL statement, 2 May 2026.

A preferred bidder is not the same as a completed takeover. The March announcement identified the stage of the sale process; the EFL’s May statement confirmed the later transfer and the club’s status under league rules. Likewise, Anderson’s history with Wednesday makes him a relevant figure in the club’s story, but it cannot substitute for a sourced statement about the deal. Until an interview, recording or transcript containing his takeover remarks is available, those views should not be presented as fact.
