The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das’s appointment as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an All India Radio News (Akashvani) report dated 22 February 2025. Akashvani said the appointment would last for the Prime Minister’s term or until further orders, whichever came first.

Akashvani reported on 22 February 2025 that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved Das’s appointment as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. How long is the appointment?
Akashvani reported the tenure condition as: “His appointment will be coterminous with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.” In other words, the stated appointment ends with the Prime Minister’s term unless an earlier order changes it.
Who is Shaktikanta Das?
Akashvani identifies Das as a retired 1980-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. Before this PMO appointment, he served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and as Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs.

The Ministry of Finance’s 12 December 2018 announcement of his appointment as RBI Governor identifies him as the former Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs and says he was appointed RBI Governor for a three-year period. What does Principal Secretary-2 do?
The announcement confirms Das’s designation but does not provide a detailed job description or explain how his responsibilities are divided with other officials in the Prime Minister’s Office. The title alone is not enough to establish his specific remit.
