The four organizations below offer distinct starting points, not a ranking or a complete directory. Choose by the issue and geography you want to support, then check current programs, outcomes, and financial and accountability information before giving.
Four environmental charities to know
These organizations illustrate different approaches to environmental work. Their descriptions reflect their own stated missions and available profiles; they are not independent measures of results.
The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global conservation nonprofit whose stated goals include addressing climate change and protecting oceans, land, and freshwater. The organization describes itself as “a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive.” Charity Navigator’s TNC profile and TNC’s “Who We Are” page provide further information. Profile details such as reach or staff counts can change and should be checked against current sources.
Environmental Defense Fund
Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) describes work on climate change, people and nature, and health, using science and economics. Its examples include reducing pollution and methane, and it says it works in more than 30 countries. EDF summarizes its goals this way: “We work to stabilize the climate, strengthen the ability of people and nature to thrive and support people’s health.” These are the organization’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of its reach or impact. Environmental Working Group
Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an environmental nonprofit with a Charity Navigator profile that includes accountability information and public-data disclosures keyed to fiscal year 2024. For a decision about a specific issue or program, consult EWG’s current mission and program information directly. A profile rating alone does not show how much environmental impact a particular program achieves.
Environmental Investigation Agency
Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) focuses on investigating environmental crimes and campaigning to protect the natural world through policy, law enforcement, and behavior change. Its profile states: “EIA’s mission is to protect the environment by exposing environmental crimes and campaigning for the protection of the natural world via progressive policy-making, improved law enforcement, and behavior change.” Charity Navigator identifies the U.S. entity as a 501(c)(3); check the current EIA profile for its status and any rating, since profile information can change.

How to choose which charity to support
Start with the change you want your donation to support. A conservation project, a climate or health campaign, research, and an investigation or enforcement effort may all serve environmental goals, but they do so through different methods.
- Issue: Identify whether you care most about land and water conservation, climate, pollution and health, research, or enforcement and advocacy.
- Geography: Check whether the organization works in the place you care about and whether it acts directly or through partners.
- Approach: Look for the methods relevant to your goal, such as conservation projects, research, policy work, litigation, public education, or investigations.
- Evidence and accountability: Review current programs and reported outcomes alongside financial filings and governance information. Check the date and scope of any third-party rating.
- Giving route: Confirm the recipient’s legal identity and donate through its official page or a platform you trust.
What charity ratings can—and cannot—tell you
A rating can be a useful screening input, but it is not a verdict on which organization is best for every donor, nor proof that a specific environmental outcome has occurred. Charity Navigator’s 2026 Rating Methodology Guide describes its rating and curated-list criteria, including four-star ratings and impact evaluation where applicable. Read the methodology and the charity’s own program evidence together, and verify that profile information is current.

Giving thoughtfully
Before donating, confirm the organization’s current mission, programs, geographic scope, legal identity, and financial and accountability disclosures. If you use a giving platform, check its terms and confirm the intended recipient; Charity Navigator’s site identifies its Giving Basket as a way to support other organizations through its website. A platform is a giving route, not a substitute for evaluating the charity itself.
