As of October 8, 2026, Revolut is listed as Europe’s most valuable private company, at a reported valuation of $115 billion. That is a private-company valuation estimate—not a live share price or a public-market value. For European fintech unicorns, the available 2026 figures are partial: Rothschild & Co reports 15 European unicorn creations in the first quarter, including fintech 9fin, but that does not establish a complete year-to-date fintech list.
What “Europe’s most valuable fintech” means in the original headline
The exact headline appeared in a TechCrunch article by Mary Ann Azevedo on August 6, 2024. Its reference to “this year” meant 2024. At the time, the article reported—attributing the information to the Financial Times—that Revolut was planning a secondary share sale at a $45 billion valuation, conditional on the reported plan proceeding. This was not a completed public-market valuation. The article also noted Revolut’s $33 billion valuation in 2021. TechCrunch’s August 2024 article described the $45 billion figure as potentially making Revolut “Europe’s most valuable startup.”
Revolut’s reported valuation in October 2026
A private-company ranking updated October 1, 2026 lists Revolut at $115 billion and identifies it as Europe’s most valuable private company. The ranking uses the latest disclosed or heavily rumoured company valuations, so its figure should be read as a reported private valuation, not as a traded market price or necessarily a completed transaction. Multiples’ Revolut valuation ranking is a dated snapshot; it is not directly comparable with a public company’s market capitalization.
The change from the $45 billion figure reported in 2024 to the $115 billion ranking in October 2026 reflects different dates and evidence: the former concerned a reported, conditional secondary-share-sale valuation, while the latter is a private-company ranking value that may include rumoured estimates. Neither number by itself establishes what every shareholder could sell shares for.

Which European startups became unicorns in 2026?
A unicorn is a privately held startup valued at $1 billion or more. The available European data supports a quarterly view, not a definitive full-year list of fintech unicorns.
Fintech: 9fin
Rothschild & Co’s April 2026 Growth Equity Update, citing PitchBook, reports 15 European unicorn creations in Q1 2026. Its table includes 9fin, a UK fintech, with a $1.3 billion valuation following a March round. That is a quarterly snapshot, and the cited figures do not establish a complete list of European fintech companies that crossed the threshold during all of 2026. Rothschild & Co’s Q1 2026 Growth Equity Update provides the quarter’s broader unicorn context.

Five other European unicorns reported in January
A separate January 2026 TechCrunch roundup identified five new European unicorns: Aikido Security, Cast AI, Harmattan AI, Osapiens, and Preply. Their categories are cybersecurity, cloud optimization, defense, ESG software, and a language-learning marketplace—not fintech. TechCrunch’s geographic approach includes companies founded or substantially staffed in Europe even when incorporated elsewhere. These names therefore belong in a broad European startup discussion, but should not be added to a fintech-only list. TechCrunch’s January 2026 roundup covers those companies.
How to read the numbers without conflating them
| Figure | What it refers to | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $33 billion | Revolut valuation in 2021 | Stated in TechCrunch’s August 6, 2024 article. |
| $45 billion | Revolut valuation associated with a planned secondary share sale in 2024 | Reported by TechCrunch on August 6, 2024, attributing the report to the Financial Times; conditional, not a completed public-market valuation. |
| $115 billion | Revolut private-company ranking value | Listed by Multiples on October 1, 2026; the ranking draws on disclosed or heavily rumoured valuations. |
| 15 | European unicorn creations in Q1 2026 | Rothschild & Co’s April 2026 update, citing PitchBook; a quarterly count. |
| $1.3 billion | 9fin valuation after a March 2026 round | Reported in Rothschild & Co’s Q1 2026 European unicorn table; 9fin is identified as a UK fintech. |
A valuation is an investor pricing signal tied to a funding round, share sale, or estimate; it is not proof that a company is profitable or has durable commercial success. TechCrunch made that distinction in its January 2026 coverage, noting that valuation does not equal commercial success. Valuation comparisons are most useful when the date, transaction type, private or public status, and degree of disclosure are kept attached to each number.

Why there is no complete 2026 European fintech-unicorn list here
The cited sources establish a Q1 count and a named fintech example, plus a separate group of five non-fintech unicorns reported in January. They do not establish every European fintech that may have crossed the $1 billion threshold during the rest of 2026. A complete annual list would require a current dataset with consistent definitions or individual verification of each company’s qualifying valuation, funding announcement, industry, and European connection. The partial figures should not be treated as an exhaustive roster.
