Christopher Barrett alleged that Bungie and its parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment, fired him in 2024 to avoid retention payments tied to Sony’s acquisition of the studio. Sony and Bungie disputed that account. The lawsuit was reported settled in July 2026, but the settlement terms were not disclosed, so there is no public confirmation in the cited reporting that Barrett received $45 million—or any particular amount.

What Barrett alleged

Barrett, a former Bungie executive, sued Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment, alleging defamation and breach of contract. He said the companies terminated him to avoid payments he believed were due under retention agreements connected with Sony’s acquisition of Bungie. VGC described the alleged amount as more than $45 million. That was Barrett’s allegation, not a court finding that the money was owed or that avoiding payment motivated his firing. VGC’s report on the lawsuit

What Sony and Bungie said

In their reproduced answer to the complaint, Sony and Bungie said Barrett’s employment was terminated for Cause in March 2024 and disputed his claims of wrongful termination and payment entitlement. That filing sets out the defendants’ position; it does not decide whether their account or Barrett’s was correct. The reproduced pleadings are hosted on Scribd rather than directly retrieved official court records. Reproduced court filing

What the $45 million figure represents

The defendants’ reproduced answer describes $45,579,627 in payments scheduled for Barrett between 2024 and 2026. These figures appear in the parties’ filing and do not establish that Barrett ultimately had a right to every payment or received them. PC Gamer reported the same breakdown.
