He also criticized the timing of The Washington Post’s decision to stop endorsing presidential candidates—not the decision itself. The companies later announced a commercial partnership in April 2026, not an acquisition.
Was Uber buying Expedia?
No. In an interview with CNBC on November 4, 2024, Expedia Group chairman Barry Diller said a rumored Uber acquisition was “just not going to happen.” GeekWire reported that the Financial Times had described Uber’s interest as very early-stage exploration. That was reported deal speculation, not an announced transaction.
Diller said a tie-up made sense as an “industrial combination”: Uber provides rides, while Expedia books travel. But he opposed selling Expedia at that time. He said the company was entering a period of growth, praised CEO Ariane Gorin, and argued Expedia should not exchange its shares or be sold. He also said he held enough voting shares to stop a transaction. Those were Diller’s views in November 2024, not a guarantee of Expedia’s future strategy. GeekWire’s November 4, 2024 report summarizes the interview and quotes.
What did Diller mean by the Post’s “blunder”?
Diller was responding to The Washington Post’s decision to end its tradition of endorsing presidential candidates. He called the decision “absolutely principled,” but said it had been made too late: “They made a blunder,” he said. “It should have happened months before.” His criticism was about timing, not the policy of stopping endorsements. GeekWire reported Diller’s remarks.

Why did the Washington Post stop endorsing presidential candidates?
In an October 28, 2024 note, owner Jeff Bezos said endorsements could create a perception of bias and argued that presidential endorsements do not tip election results. He described ending them as a principled decision, while conceding the timing reflected “inadequate planning.” Bezos said neither campaign nor candidate had been consulted. He also denied that the decision was connected to a meeting between Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp and Donald Trump. These are Bezos’s stated explanation and denials, not independent findings. What changed between the 2024 rumor and 2026?
In April 2026, Expedia Group and Uber announced a commercial partnership. Uber customers in the United States could book Expedia-supplied hotels through the Uber app, and Uber rides were planned for integration into the Expedia app. Uber said the eventual hotel selection would exceed 700,000 properties; that was a company-announced plan, not independent confirmation of inventory available on a particular date. Uber’s April 29, 2026 announcement describes the planned customer features.

Expedia’s SEC filing describes the arrangement as a marketing partnership: Uber could access Expedia lodging inventory through an API for remarketing. The filing reports that payments made to and received from Uber under the arrangement were each below $120,000 to date. That disclosure concerns the marketing arrangement, not the value of an acquisition. The company evidence describes cooperation, not a buyout. See Expedia Group’s SEC filing.

The 2024 headlines concerned whether Uber might acquire Expedia; Diller rejected that prospect while conceding the strategic logic of joining rides and travel booking. The 2026 announcement was a different kind of deal: a commercial partnership that links services without establishing a change in Expedia’s ownership. For travelers, the announced features point to booking hotels through Uber and accessing Uber rides in Expedia, subject to the companies’ rollout. Neither the rumor nor Diller’s comments establish what Expedia’s future corporate strategy will be.
