There is no single “best” crypto wallet for everyone: the right choice depends on whether you prioritize offline signing, a particular blockchain, mobile access or a connection to Coinbase. This guide compares Ledger Wallet, MetaMask, Trust Wallet and Coinbase Wallet using their current product documentation and a four-way comparison published by Ledger. It is not a verified snapshot of what each wallet offered in 2024.
What self-custody means for your money
A self-custody wallet puts control of the keys and recovery material in your hands. The provider generally cannot restore access to your assets if you lose that material or someone else obtains it. Trust Wallet states, “Your keys, your crypto. We never access or store your private keys.” Coinbase likewise describes Coinbase Wallet as a self-custody wallet that gives users control of their private keys. These are providers’ descriptions of their products, not guarantees that funds are safe from loss or theft. Trust Wallet security; Coinbase Wallet security.
Self-custody is different from holding crypto in an account where a company controls the keys on your behalf. It also means the recovery burden shifts to you: protect recovery information, verify transactions before approving them and be wary of requests to disclose a recovery phrase.
How the four wallets differ
Ledger’s own comparison groups these products by intended use. Because Ledger sells one of the products in the comparison, its “best for” descriptions are vendor characterizations, not an independent ranking.

| Wallet | How it works and access | Ledger’s stated fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live) | A self-custody app used with a Ledger hardware signer. Ledger says the signer keeps keys offline and transactions require confirmation on the device. | Security-focused users seeking DeFi access. | A Ledger signer is required to sign transactions. Watch Mode can be used to explore and view a portfolio, but does not sign or broadcast transactions. |
| MetaMask | A software wallet for browser and mobile use, commonly associated with EVM-compatible networks. | EVM and DeFi power users. | Ledger characterizes MetaMask and the other software wallets as storing keys on an online device. That is Ledger’s comparison, not an independent security assessment. |
| Trust Wallet | A mobile-focused, multi-chain software wallet. | Multi-chain mobile users. | Trust Wallet says it does not access or store users’ private keys and describes security measures including encryption, audits, monitoring and a bug bounty. These are vendor claims, not comparative test results. |
| Coinbase Wallet | A self-custody wallet with different wallet modes, including smart (passkey), email/social-login and mnemonic wallets. | Users in the Coinbase ecosystem. | Network support varies by wallet mode and can change. Coinbase documents transaction previews, token-approval alerts, dapp blocking and permission management; some features have Ethereum and Polygon limitations. |

Compare custody, networks and signing before choosing
Decide where you want the signing keys
With a software wallet, keys are kept on an internet-connected device, according to Ledger’s characterization of the three software wallets in its comparison. Ledger Wallet takes a different approach: its connected app prepares transactions, while the hardware signer keeps keys offline and requires device confirmation. That changes the signing setup, but the available sources do not provide independent comparative security testing or show that any wallet eliminates the risk of user error, scams or device compromise.

- Connectivity: USB-C cable connection only. No Bluetooth.Compatible with the Ledger Wallet crypto app, both desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and mobile (Android only). Not compatible with iOS.
- Protect your digital assets with the industry's best security: keep your private keys offline in your private signer, battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, CC EAL 6+ certified Secure Element, constantly updated Ledger OS.

If you choose Ledger Wallet, factor in the physical signer as part of the workflow. Watch Mode is useful for viewing a portfolio without signing, but it is not a way to send transactions without the signer. A hardware wallet is not a requirement for every software-wallet user; it is relevant when you want the offline-signing arrangement Ledger describes.
Confirm the exact network and wallet mode
Never rely on a wallet brand name alone to decide whether a deposit address can receive a particular asset. Coinbase’s documentation distinguishes smart (passkey), email/social-login and mnemonic wallets, and support for Bitcoin and Solana differs across those modes. Its support page also says certain previously supported networks will cease to be supported after August 15, 2026. Check Coinbase’s current wallet and network support guidance for the exact mode and network before transferring; do not assume that support for one Coinbase Wallet mode means support for another.

For any of the four wallets, verify the precise network, asset and receiving address in the app and with the recipient before sending. Network support and wallet features can change, so confirm current provider documentation rather than relying on an old list.
Consider how you interact with transactions
MetaMask describes readable transaction information, phishing alerts and integrations with several hardware wallets. Coinbase describes previews, token-approval alerts, dapp blocking and permission management, with stated limitations for some features on Ethereum and Polygon. Ledger’s workflow adds confirmation on its signing device. These are feature descriptions, not a guarantee that a transaction is legitimate or that a scam will be stopped. Compare the total cost, not just a wallet fee
Costs can include a wallet or provider fee and the blockchain network fee for the specific transaction. Ethereum.org’s wallet directory lists example swap fees of 0.875% for MetaMask and 1% for Coinbase Wallet, but those directory entries are not a complete total-cost comparison or a guarantee of the price you will see. Check the current in-app quote, including network costs, before confirming a transaction. Ethereum.org wallet directory.
A practical way to choose
- Choose Ledger Wallet if you want the offline hardware-signing model Ledger describes and are prepared to use a Ledger signer for transactions.
- Consider MetaMask if your main activity is with EVM networks or DeFi and its available network support and features match your needs.
- Consider Trust Wallet if you prefer mobile access across multiple chains and have verified support for the exact assets and networks you use.
- Consider Coinbase Wallet if you want a self-custody wallet connected to Coinbase’s ecosystem, after checking the specific wallet mode and network support.
Whichever you choose, test the intended flow carefully, review transaction details before signing, and secure your recovery material. Do not send funds until you have verified that the receiving wallet supports the exact asset on the exact network.

What this comparison can and cannot establish
The available sources do not establish a neutral “four leading” ranking, a comparable market-share statistic, or a complete, dated feature matrix for all four products in 2024. Ledger’s comparison is useful for seeing how one provider frames the options, but it is not independent evidence that its preferred product is best. Wallet features, supported networks, fees, wallet modes and product names may change; consult each provider’s current documentation before making a transfer or choosing a setup.
