CNN reported in 2025 that 97 small businesses said Tesla owed them more than $110 million for work over the previous five years, and that more than $24.5 million remained unpaid to some of them for completed work at the time of its investigation. Some contractors described borrowing or bankruptcy after payment disputes. Those figures and accounts concern claims against Tesla and other companies—not a finding that Elon Musk personally withheld particular invoices.
What did CNN report about the unpaid bills?
CNN said it reviewed thousands of pages of Austin civil court records and found that 97 small businesses claimed Tesla owed them more than $110 million over five years. CNN also reported that more than $24.5 million was still owed to some of those businesses for completed work when the investigation aired in 2025. These are figures from CNN’s records review and reporting, not independently audited totals or a court determination that every claimed amount was valid.
The distinction matters: the total amount businesses said they were owed over five years is not the same measure as the amount CNN said remained unpaid at the time of its reporting. Nor does the reporting establish that every business had a court judgment against Tesla.
Which contractors described serious financial consequences?
Professional Process Piping
Jennifer Meissner, owner of Professional Process Piping, told CNN that Tesla owed her company $1.6 million for completed work and that her business went bankrupt. CNN reported that Tesla and Meissner settled, with Tesla agreeing to pay $650,000 to Meissner’s subcontractors. CNN said Meissner herself was not fully paid under the settlement account it reported. Meissner described the effect of the dispute to CNN: “It was devastating what they did.”

The Austin contractor CNN did not name
CNN also described an Austin company that said it borrowed short-term and filed for bankruptcy after Tesla allegedly failed to pay nearly $600,000. CNN’s broadcast transcript did not name the business. Electrek identified it as Full Circle Technologies and reported that its CEO, Abheeshek Sharma, said the settlement released Tesla without payment to the company. That identification and account come from Electrek; they should not be treated as a verified finding from the court record based on the reporting summarized here.
What did Tesla and the contractor say about the work?
CNN said it contacted Tesla multiple times without response. CNN also reported that, during the settlement, Tesla said it was unhappy with Professional Process Piping’s work. Meissner disputed that characterization, telling CNN she had previously received positive reviews from Tesla. The reporting presents competing accounts; it does not resolve that disagreement as a court finding.

What does a contractor lien show—and what does it not show?
A contractor lien is a recorded claim connected to payment for work or materials. CNN used lien filings and civil court records in its investigation. A lien documents that a claim was made; by itself, it does not establish that a court found the amount due, that the full amount was ultimately owed, or that a later settlement was paid.
That is why the reported figures should be read as claims and reported unpaid balances, not as a list of proven debts. The available reporting also does not establish whether all settlement payments were made, whether the cases later had procedural developments, or the businesses’ present status.
How did CNN compare Tesla with Apple?
CNN reported that Apple had less than one-tenth Tesla’s amount in unpaid Texas contractor bills in its comparison. That is a comparison CNN made for its investigation, not a comprehensive ranking of either company’s payment practices or a full measure of all contractor disputes. The underlying case-level information summarized in the reporting does not support a broader apples-to-apples ranking.
