Everton’s move to appoint Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear is complete: the club confirmed his appointment on 12 May 2025. BBC Sport had reported the planned appointment on 7 March, with a 1 June start date. Kinnear had led Leeds since 2017, and Leeds said he would leave at the end of the 2024–25 season.
When Everton appointed Angus Kinnear
The story moved from a planned appointment to a confirmed one over two months. On 7 March 2025, BBC Sport reported that Everton would appoint Kinnear as chief executive, with a start date of 1 June. On 12 May, BBC Sport reported that Everton had confirmed the appointment. The March report said Everton’s permanent CEO role had been vacant since Denise Barrett-Baxendale left in June 2023, with Colin Chong serving as interim CEO.
Leeds United announced on 7 March that Kinnear would leave at the end of the season. That timing places his departure at the end of the 2024–25 season, rather than indicating he was still being considered by Everton after May.
Who is Angus Kinnear?
Leeds appointed Kinnear to its board as managing director in 2017. The club said he had previously spent three years as West Ham United’s managing director and a decade at Arsenal in marketing, sales and partnerships roles. Those career details are Leeds United’s account of his background.

What Leeds credited him with
In its departure announcement, Leeds said Kinnear had held a leadership role at the club since 2017. It credited his tenure with overseeing three major developments:
- Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League in 2020.
- The 2023 ownership transition to 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group.
- The club’s purchase and return of Elland Road.
Those are Leeds United’s descriptions of his record. The appointment reporting does not provide an independent assessment of his performance or establish how he will perform at Everton.

Leadership changes at both clubs
Everton’s plans in March 2025
At the time of the March appointment report, Everton said director of football Kevin Thelwell would leave at the end of the season when his contract expired. Chief commercial and communications officer Richard Kenyon was also due to leave. Everton said it planned to move from a single director of football to a wider sporting leadership team, while summer transfer-window planning was under way under the sporting department and manager David Moyes. These were announcements and plans reported at the time, not confirmation of Everton’s current organizational structure.
Leeds’ succession arrangements
Leeds announced in March that Peter McCormick would join as executive vice chairman, supporting strategic planning, stadium redevelopment and commercial matters. On 29 April, the club announced Robbie Evans as managing director and Adam Underwood as sporting director. Those later appointments describe Leeds’ announced leadership structure following Kinnear’s departure; McCormick should not be described as his direct replacement.

What Companies House confirms
Companies House lists Kinnear as an active director of Everton Football Club Company Limited, with an appointment date of 11 June 2025. The record supports his corporate directorship and the filing date; it does not independently confirm his executive job title. Companies House also cautions that it does not check the accuracy of filed information.

Everton’s confirmation establishes that Kinnear was appointed CEO, while Leeds’ statements document his departure and the club’s account of his tenure. The corporate register records a director appointment. These sources do not establish Kinnear’s detailed performance as Everton CEO, his present-day executive responsibilities, or later internal decisions at either club.
