Ethereum’s decentralized finance (DeFi) tools can make some financial services available online without a conventional bank or other central intermediary. That is a possibility, not proof that DeFi has reduced financial exclusion at scale: the evidence cited here does not establish that outcome, and access still depends on technology, usable interfaces, safe assets and practical protections.
What is Ethereum DeFi?
Ethereum DeFi is a set of financial services built from blockchain records, crypto assets, smart contracts, protocols and applications. A smart contract is code on Ethereum that can carry out specified actions; a protocol uses that code to provide a function such as exchanging or lending assets, while an application gives people an interface for using it.
Shared token standards and composability let services connect. For example, an asset issued through one application may be usable in another. That can help developers combine functions into new products, but interconnected services can also pass risks or failures along their links.
Ethereum’s technical availability is not the same as universal access. A user needs suitable internet access, a wallet and an application they can operate, and enough understanding to assess what a transaction authorizes. Transactions that change Ethereum contract state require gas paid in ETH. Fees vary with network demand; Ethereum Layer 2 networks can offer lower fees and more capacity, but costs and experience depend on the network and transaction.

How could DeFi help people without access to a bank?
The potential benefit is that an internet-connected person may be able to reach payments, savings-like products, credit or markets without a nearby branch or a single service provider deciding who can use a particular platform. Open protocols may therefore widen the routes through which someone can seek financial services.
But “open to anyone able to use Ethereum” describes technical availability, not equal practical access or a safe result. People may lack reliable connectivity, an appropriate device, local currency on-ramps, confidence with wallets, or the ability to recover from mistakes. A service can be accessible from a phone and still be unsuitable for someone who needs clear disclosure, customer support or a way to challenge a loss.
The World Bank says access to affordable payments, credit, savings and insurance matters for poverty reduction and economic growth. Its global account-ownership series rose from 51% in 2011 to 76% in 2021; it also says more than a billion people remained financially excluded on a page accessed October 8, 2026, without specifying an estimate year for that statement. These figures describe general financial inclusion, not Ethereum use or an effect caused by DeFi.

What services can Ethereum DeFi provide?
| Service type | What it may offer | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Payments and transfers | Transfer crypto assets, including stablecoins denominated in a familiar unit. | Network fees, conversion costs and access to local currency can affect whether a transfer is practical. |
| Exchange | Swap one crypto asset for another through decentralized exchange protocols. | Prices, liquidity, transaction costs and the assets being traded matter to the outcome. |
| Lending and borrowing | Supply assets to a lending pool or borrow against posted collateral. | Collateral requirements, asset prices and liquidation rules determine who can borrow and what happens if collateral loses value. |
| Tokenized assets and other products | Use applications for products such as real-world asset tokens, staking or prediction markets. | The product’s structure, underlying asset and legal or operational arrangements need separate scrutiny. |

How does DeFi lending work?
In a common model, a lender supplies crypto assets to a pool from which borrowers can draw. In another, a borrower posts crypto collateral and borrows against it. The amount available and the risk to both sides depend on the protocol’s rules, the assets involved, their prices and pool utilization.
If collateral falls in value enough to breach a protocol’s requirements, it may be liquidated. A borrower can therefore lose collateral even if the loan was initially available; a lender or liquidity provider also faces risks tied to the assets and protocol rather than the protections of a conventional deposit account.

An IMF analysis from 2022 found that more than 90% of DeFi lending was denominated in stablecoins and 75% of collateral consisted of volatile crypto assets. Those are historical figures from that analysis, not a current market-composition estimate. They illustrate why access to borrowing does not by itself make credit low-risk or affordable.
Are stablecoins cheaper for remittances?
They may be cheaper for some routes, but there is no universal saving. The IMF’s August 2026 remarks say stablecoins may lower remittance costs, while noting that the actual cost varies by corridor because of on- and off-ramp fees and exchange-rate differences. Someone sending funds must consider the full route, including how the sender obtains the stablecoin and how the recipient converts or spends it.

What can prevent DeFi from being inclusive?
Technology and transaction costs
Internet access, device availability, wallet setup and transaction fees shape whether a person can use a service at all. Layer 2 networks are one route to lower fees and greater capacity, but a user still has to select and navigate a particular network, and fees vary.
Complexity, security and redress
Automatic execution does not eliminate dependence on software, wallet security, interfaces or the people able to inspect code. Ethereum.org notes that many DeFi products do not take custody of funds, but self-custody does not prevent contract vulnerabilities, user mistakes, malicious applications, volatile asset prices or counterparty failures. Losing control of a wallet can also leave a user with few practical recovery options.
The World Bank identifies cybersecurity, excessive risk taking, poor disclosure, opacity around asset ownership and limited redress as DeFi concerns. Its broader financial-inclusion material also flags unequal technology access, privacy, cybersecurity and operational risks in digital financial services.

Stablecoin and wider financial-system risks
Stablecoins introduce risks beyond an individual transfer. The IMF’s 2026 remarks discuss fragmented payment systems, possible runs, currency substitution and macro-financial pressures, particularly in emerging markets. These are policy concerns, not inevitable outcomes, but they matter when weighing the wider effects of increased stablecoin use.
How to compare an Ethereum DeFi option
There is no single “best” protocol established by the evidence here. Before using a service, compare the parts that determine its costs, control and exposure:
Quick Recap
- Service: Identify whether the product is for payments, exchange, lending or a tokenized asset.
- Network and fees: Check which chain or Layer 2 it uses and what transaction costs may apply.
- Collateral and liquidation: For borrowing, understand what collateral is required and the conditions under which it can be liquidated.
- Custody: Establish who controls the keys and what recovery options exist if access is lost.
- Asset and contract risks: Consider the protocol, stablecoin and smart-contract risks, as well as the possibility that an asset’s value changes.
- Disclosure and recourse: Look for understandable information, user support and any available legal or dispute-resolution channels.
