The Complete Guide to Website Hosting Costs in 2026

Website hosting ranges from free static hosting to hundreds of dollars per month. Learn how to compare introductory and renewal prices, calculate three-year costs, and choose the right hosting type.

Website hosting can cost anywhere from $0 to hundreds of dollars per month. A simple static site may fit on a free platform, while a small business site commonly costs about $3–$30 per month, managed WordPress often costs $15–$40 per month, a basic self-managed VPS starts around $4–$50 per month before administration, and hosted ecommerce platforms begin around $29 per month before apps and payment fees.

The advertised hosting price is not necessarily what you will pay. Introductory rates may require 12, 36, or 48 months of prepayment and can increase substantially at renewal. Your realistic budget should also account for the domain, email, backups, security, storage, bandwidth, software, payment processing, maintenance, and taxes.

Pricing note: Dollar figures in this guide are U.S. prices checked against the cited provider pages on August 9, 2026, before applicable taxes. Promotions, renewal rates, included features, usage allowances, and regional pricing can change. Confirm the final checkout price and terms before purchasing.

Website hosting cost at a glance

There is no single average price for hosting because free static hosting, shared hosting, managed WordPress, a cloud application, and an ecommerce platform are different products with different pricing models and management responsibilities.

Website or hosting type Planning budget before tax and labor Usually best for Main cost or risk to check
Free static hosting $0–$10 per month Landing pages, portfolios, documentation, and static sites Usage limits, forms, databases, bandwidth, and commercial-use terms
Shared hosting About $3–$18 per month initially; commonly $10–$30 per month after renewal Blogs, brochure sites, portfolios, and small business websites Introductory pricing, resource limits, backups, and email terms
Managed WordPress About $15–$40 per month for mainstream plans Business-critical WordPress sites whose owners want support and maintenance What managed actually includes and how much support costs at renewal
Self-managed VPS or cloud VM About $4–$50 per month for the server itself Developers and operators who need root access or custom software Administration, security, backups, monitoring, and recovery labor
Growing application About $20–$200 or more per month Applications using databases, workers, object storage, CDNs, or multiple services Usage-based bandwidth, database, log, and egress charges
Hosted ecommerce About $29–$399 or more per month before apps and transaction fees Businesses that need checkout, inventory, payments, taxes, and shipping tools Payment processing, apps, subscriptions, and transaction volume
Dedicated or enterprise hosting Commonly $50–$500 or more per month High sustained demand, isolation, compliance, or specialized infrastructure Hardware, redundancy, support, bandwidth, and service-level requirements

These are planning bands rather than statistically calculated market averages. A provider’s promotional price is also not the same as its renewal price. For example, Hostinger advertises Premium hosting at $2.99 per month on a 48-month term but lists renewal at $10.99 per month. Bluehost lists $3.99 per month for a 36-month Starter term and $9.99 per month at renewal. SiteGround lists StartUp at $2.99 per month initially and $17.99 per month at renewal. See the current Hostinger, Bluehost, and SiteGround plan pages for the conditions attached to those prices.

Hosting cost is only part of the website budget

Hosting is the service that stores your website and delivers it to visitors. It is separate from the domain name, which is the website’s address. A complete budget is better represented by this formula:

Total website cost = hosting + domain + email + backups + security + CDN or storage + software + payment processing + maintenance labor + taxes

For a simple personal site, the hosting subscription may be the largest recurring expense. For an online store, payment processing, apps, email marketing, customer support, and maintenance can cost more than the underlying server.

Website hosting costs by type

Free and static hosting: $0 to about $10 per month

Static hosting serves prebuilt HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and other files. It is often the least expensive option because there is no continuously running application server or database. It works well for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Personal portfolios and resumes.
  • Landing pages and small brochure sites.
  • Documentation and technical project sites.
  • Blogs generated during a build process.
  • Jamstack and other static web projects.

Netlify’s Free plan is $0 and includes custom domains with SSL, a global CDN, functions, and a monthly 300-credit limit. Netlify’s Personal plan is listed at $9 per month, while Pro begins at $20 per month. The platform uses credits for production deploys, compute, bandwidth, and requests, so a larger or more active project may leave the free tier. Details are available on Netlify’s pricing page and its credit-based billing documentation.

Vercel’s Hobby plan is free. Its Pro plan is $20 per month and includes $20 of usage credit, after which resources such as bandwidth, function execution, invocations, image optimization, and storage are metered. See Vercel’s pricing page.

Free static hosting can still lead to other costs. A custom domain, contact-form delivery, a database, authentication, search, image storage, video delivery, monitoring, or a paid team plan may be separate. Static hosting is not automatically suitable for a traditional WordPress installation, a database-backed application, or a site that needs server-side uploads.

Shared hosting: about $3–$30 per month

Shared hosting places multiple websites on a provider-managed server. It is generally the least expensive conventional hosting category and is suitable for many low- to moderate-traffic blogs, local-business websites, portfolios, and brochure sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Example plan Advertised introductory price Listed renewal price Important condition
Hostinger Premium $2.99 per month $10.99 per month 48-month term; $143.52 charged upfront
Bluehost Starter $3.99 per month $9.99 per month 36-month term
SiteGround StartUp $2.99 per month $17.99 per month Promotional price with 12 months prepaid
SiteGround GrowBig $4.99 per month $29.99 per month Promotional price with 12 months prepaid
SiteGround GoGeek $7.99 per month $44.99 per month Promotional price with 12 months prepaid

Shared plans often include a control panel, one-click WordPress installation, SSL certificates, email mailboxes, backups, CDN integration, basic security tools, customer support, and sometimes a domain free for the first year. The exact package matters more than the category name.

For example, the listed Hostinger Premium plan includes three websites, 20 GB of SSD storage, a first-year domain on qualifying registrations, weekly backups, a CDN, and two mailboxes per website free for one year. Its listed Unlimited plan includes unlimited websites, 50 GB of NVMe storage, daily backups, a CDN, and unlimited mailboxes per website for one year. Hostinger states that unlimited features remain subject to its Fair Usage Policy.

Shared hosting is a good default when you want a control panel, conventional WordPress or PHP support, email, and low administration. It becomes less attractive when CPU, RAM, PHP-worker, inode, database, concurrent-process, or email-sending limits interfere with the site.

Do not treat unlimited storage or bandwidth as unlimited performance. A plan may have plenty of disk space but restrict CPU time, simultaneous processes, database activity, or the number of files. Read the resource policy before comparing plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed WordPress hosting: about $15–$40 per month

Managed WordPress hosting adds a management and support layer around WordPress. Depending on the provider, it may include automatic updates, malware protection, performance configuration, backups, staging, one-click restores, migration assistance, and WordPress-specific support. It is not necessarily a different physical server architecture from shared hosting.

DreamHost’s listed DreamPress 1 plan costs $14.99 per month for the first year and renews at $19.99 per month. The plan includes one website, 15 GB of NVMe storage, a provider-stated suitability figure of 40,000 monthly visits, 14 days of backup retention, staging, migration, unmetered bandwidth, email, a domain for one year, and WordPress support. The visitor figure is provider guidance, not an independent performance test. See DreamHost’s current hosting plans.

WordPress.com is a hosted WordPress service and should not be confused with installing the open-source WordPress software on your own host. Its listed U.S. prices include:

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model)
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
  • Personal: $9 per month monthly, $4 per month on a one-year term, $3.25 per month on a two-year term, or $2.75 per month on a three-year term.
  • Business: $40 per month monthly, $25 per month annually, $20 per month for two years, or $17.50 per month for three years.
  • Commerce: $70 per month monthly, $45 per month annually, $36 per month for two years, or $31.50 per month for three years.

Those prices are from WordPress.com’s hosting page; features and billing terms vary by plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed WordPress is often worth the premium when the site generates leads or revenue, plugin failures would be costly, staging and restores matter, or the owner does not want to administer updates and security. It may be poor value for a simple static page or for an experienced operator who already has a reliable VPS deployment and recovery process.

The WordPress software itself is open source and licensed under the GPL, but hosting, premium themes, plugins, support, and maintenance can still cost money. The license is described at WordPress.org.

VPS hosting: about $4–$50 per month for infrastructure

A virtual private server provides a virtual machine with more isolated resources and control than ordinary shared hosting. A VPS may be self-managed, meaning you handle the server, or managed, meaning the provider handles much of the operating system and administration.

DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplets start at $4 per month for 512 MiB of RAM, one vCPU, 10 GiB of SSD storage, and 500 GiB of transfer. Its $6 plan lists 1 GiB of RAM, one vCPU, 25 GiB of SSD storage, and 1,000 GiB of transfer. DigitalOcean changed Droplets to per-second billing on January 1, 2026, with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum and a monthly cap. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DigitalOcean backups cost 20% of Droplet cost for weekly backups or 30% for daily backups under its percentage-based plans. On a $4 Droplet, that is $0.80 per month for weekly backups or $1.20 per month for daily backups, before other services. See DigitalOcean’s backup pricing.

Amazon Lightsail lists a $3.50 per month IPv6-only Linux bundle with 512 MB of memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB of SSD storage, and 1 TB of transfer. Its $5 per month Linux bundle lists 1 GB of memory, two vCPUs, 40 GB of SSD storage, and 2 TB of transfer. AWS gives an example combining a $5 instance, a $2.50 CDN distribution, and a $1 object-storage bucket for $8.50 per month. See Lightsail pricing and Lightsail bundle specifications.

DreamHost’s listed managed VPS Business plan costs $13.75 per month for the first year and renews at $31.99 per month. It includes 2 GB of RAM, two cores, 60 GB of NVMe storage, daily backups, unmetered bandwidth, email, SSL, and a domain for one year.

A cheap self-managed VPS is not equivalent to a cheap managed hosting plan. Add the following before deciding that a VPS is less expensive:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Operating-system updates and server hardening.
  • Firewall configuration and intrusion prevention.
  • Web-server, PHP, runtime, and database configuration.
  • TLS certificate automation.
  • Off-site backups and restore testing.
  • Monitoring and alerting.
  • Email delivery through a separate provider.
  • Control-panel licensing, if you do not want to work from the command line.
  • Incident response and disaster recovery time.

The provider invoice may be only $4 or $5 per month because you are accepting more operational responsibility. If server administration takes even a small amount of paid labor each month, a managed plan may have the lower total cost.

Cloud, serverless, and application hosting: roughly $20–$200 or more per month

Cloud hosting can mean a single virtual machine, a managed application platform, containers, serverless functions, or a multi-service architecture. The pricing model may be a predictable monthly instance charge, usage-based billing, or a combination.

Serverless services can be inexpensive for small or irregular workloads because you pay for use rather than a permanently running server. AWS Lambda, for example, charges for requests and execution duration measured in GB-seconds. Its listed free tier includes one million requests and 400,000 GB-seconds per month. See AWS Lambda pricing.

Cloud bills commonly include separate charges for:

  • Compute instances or function execution.
  • Database storage, queries, connections, and input/output.
  • Object storage and storage operations.
  • Bandwidth and data transfer.
  • Data egress leaving a provider or region.
  • Load balancers and public IP addresses.
  • Logs, monitoring, and retention.
  • Multiple regions, replicas, and disaster recovery.

Model the architecture rather than multiplying the price of one virtual machine by 12. A cloud service can be cheaper than a traditional plan for bursty traffic, but it can become more expensive when the application adds a managed database, high outbound bandwidth, large files, long-retained logs, or several always-on services.

Dedicated hosting: commonly $50–$500 or more per month

Dedicated hosting reserves a physical server or dedicated hardware environment for one customer. It may be justified by sustained resource demand, large databases, compliance or isolation requirements, custom networking, specialized hardware, or predictable performance requirements.

There is no meaningful universal average price. Provider comparison samples place dedicated plans from roughly $41 to nearly $200 per month, while broader hosting ranges extend to several hundred dollars per month. These are samples and orientation ranges, not a market-wide average. Current comparison context is available from Forbes Advisor and TechRadar.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

A dedicated server should not be chosen merely because it sounds faster. A well-configured managed VPS or cloud architecture may provide adequate performance, easier scaling, and a lower total cost.

Ecommerce hosting: $29–$399 or more per month before transaction costs

An online store pays for more than the server. Its budget may include the store platform, domain, theme, apps or extensions, payment processing, fraud prevention, tax calculation, shipping integrations, inventory tools, email marketing, customer support, backups, and maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shopify’s listed U.S. pricing starts at $29 per month when billed yearly or $39 per month when billed monthly for Basic. That is an annual-equivalent subscription cost of $348 when paid annually, or $468 when paying monthly for 12 months. The Basic plan lists online card rates from 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction. Shopify also lists Grow at $79 per month annually and Advanced at $299 per month annually. See Shopify’s pricing page.

For comparison, Stripe’s standard U.S. online-card rate is currently 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful domestic-card transaction, with additional charges listed for international cards, manually entered cards, and currency conversion. See Stripe’s pricing.

Do not add Stripe’s fee on top of Shopify’s listed card rate unless you are actually using Stripe or another separate payment processor. The applicable processor and contract determine the fee.

At $10,000 per month in domestic online card sales across 200 transactions, a 2.9% plus $0.30 fee would be approximately:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Percentage fee: $290.
  • Per-transaction fee: $60.
  • Total processing cost: approximately $350 per month.

That $4,200 annual payment-processing cost is separate from Shopify’s $348 annual-equivalent Basic subscription. At low sales volume, the monthly platform subscription may dominate. At higher volume, payment rates, apps, shipping, and support may matter more.

The extra website costs people forget

Cost What to budget or investigate
Domain Often separate; sometimes free for the first year only
SSL or HTTPS Often free through Let’s Encrypt or host integration
Email Included on some hosting plans; paid separately for business suites
Backups Included with varying frequency and retention; independent off-site copies may cost extra
CDN Free tiers exist; paid plans, transformation, transfer, and requests may be metered
Storage May be bundled, capped, or charged per GB-month
Bandwidth and egress May be unmetered under fair-use terms, capped, or billed by usage
Security Basic protection may be included; advanced WAF, monitoring, and malware cleanup may cost extra
Themes, plugins, and apps Common recurring expenses for WordPress and ecommerce sites
Payment processing Usually a percentage plus a fixed fee per transaction
Maintenance Updates, content changes, troubleshooting, and security work
Taxes Often excluded from advertised prices and added according to location

Domain registration and renewal

A domain name is the address of the website; hosting is the service that stores and serves its files. For many ordinary, non-premium domains, a reasonable planning allowance is about $10–$25 per year. Some newer or specialized top-level domains cost more, and premium domains can cost substantially more.

ICANN explains that registrars provide registration services through agreements with registry operators and ICANN. The retail price depends on the top-level domain, registrar, promotional price, registry pricing, and whether the domain is premium. See ICANN’s domain registration explanation.

Cloudflare Registrar advertises registration starting at $7.85 and says it charges registry-level pricing without a markup, but the actual amount depends on the TLD and domain status. Registration and renewal prices can differ, particularly for premium domains. See Cloudflare’s plans and its domain renewal documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for these domain-related charges:

  • A domain advertised as free may be free only during the first year.
  • The renewal price may be higher than the registration promotion.
  • A premium domain may not qualify for a free-domain offer.
  • Domain privacy may be included, optional, or unavailable for a particular TLD.
  • A transfer may involve a fee or a temporary transfer lock.
  • Bluehost states that newly registered domains cannot be transferred to another registrar during the first 60 days; this is a provider-specific term to check before registering.

Keep the domain in an account that you control. Your business, not a web designer or hosting reseller, should remain the registrant and account owner.

SSL and HTTPS

For a normal website, the SSL certificate itself often costs $0. Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated certificate authority. Its default certificates have a 90-day lifetime and should be renewed automatically. See Let’s Encrypt’s certificate-lifetime documentation.

Cloudflare’s Free plan lists Universal SSL, CDN, DNS, and DDoS protection. Paid Cloudflare plans are listed at $20 per month billed annually or $25 monthly for Pro, and $200 annually or $250 monthly for Business. See Cloudflare’s plan comparison.

Free HTTPS does not mean complete security. TLS encrypts data in transit, but it does not fix vulnerable plugins, weak passwords, stolen credentials, malware, compromised accounts, or insecure application code. Paid certificates may be useful for organization validation, specialized support, enterprise certificate management, or contractual requirements, but a paid certificate is not automatically safer for a normal small site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Business email

Hosting email and business productivity email are separate choices. Some shared-hosting plans include a limited number of mailboxes, while a dedicated business suite generally offers stronger administration, storage, collaboration, support, and spam controls.

Microsoft 365 Business Basic currently lists $6 per user per month with annual billing or $7.20 per user per month with monthly billing. It includes professional email, web and mobile Office applications, cloud storage, and online meetings. Three staff accounts would therefore cost $18 per month, or $216 per year, before taxes. See Microsoft’s Business Basic pricing.

Transactional email is another category. Password resets, receipts, contact-form notifications, and application alerts may need a dedicated sending service even when employee inboxes are included with hosting.

Backups and disaster recovery

“Backups included” is not enough information. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How often the backup runs.
  • How many days or versions are retained.
  • Whether the database is included.
  • Whether backups are stored in a separate geographic location.
  • Whether the backup is downloadable or immutable.
  • Whether restores are self-service and free.
  • Whether canceled accounts retain any backups.
  • Whether the provider tests restoration.

DreamHost states that its general hosting plans keep an average of two weeks of website backups and five days of database backups, while long-term backups are not included. This illustrates why the word daily does not describe the full recovery capability. See DreamHost’s hosting FAQ.

For off-site storage, Cloudflare R2 lists standard storage at $0.015 per GB-month, Class A operations at $4.50 per million, Class B operations at $0.36 per million, and no egress charge for standard R2 storage. Infrequent Access storage is listed at $0.01 per GB-month but has retrieval fees. See R2 pricing. AWS S3 separates storage, requests, retrieval, data transfer, replication, management, and analytics charges; see AWS S3 pricing.

A backup stored only on the same server, account, or provider as the live website is not a complete disaster-recovery plan. Maintain at least one independently accessible copy and test that it can restore the site.

CDN, bandwidth, storage, and egress

These billing terms describe different things:

  • Storage: how much data exists.
  • Bandwidth or transfer: how much data moves to or from visitors.
  • Requests: how often files, APIs, or functions are accessed.
  • Compute: how much CPU and memory time is used.
  • Egress: data leaving a provider or region.

A CDN can reduce latency and origin load, but it does not make every part of a site free. Image transformation, video delivery, edge functions, cache misses, origin fetches, object-storage requests, logs, and outbound transfer may all create charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon Lightsail lists CDN distributions at $2.50 per month for 50 GB of transfer, $10 per month for 200 GB, and $35 per month for 500 GB. Its example lists a $0.09 per GB outbound-transfer overage. Media-heavy websites should model video storage and delivery separately rather than assuming an ordinary “unlimited” web-hosting plan is suitable. See Lightsail pricing.

How to calculate your real hosting cost

Calculate three different numbers: the cash required today, the first-year cost, and the ongoing renewal-year cost. For longer commitments, calculate at least three years.

Step 1: Record the actual upfront charge

Do not multiply the advertised monthly equivalent by 12 unless the provider bills monthly. Record the required prepaid term and the amount charged at checkout.

Step 2: Record the renewal price

Write down the renewal rate, renewal billing interval, and whether the domain, email, backups, or other extras renew at different prices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Add non-hosting subscriptions

Include email accounts, backup services, paid themes and plugins, security tools, monitoring, CDN plans, object storage, and application services.

Step 4: Estimate variable charges

For cloud or serverless systems, estimate requests, compute time, storage, database activity, logs, and outbound transfer. For ecommerce, estimate transaction fees based on the number and value of orders.

Step 5: Value maintenance labor

Separate the provider invoice from the time required to update WordPress, patch a VPS, handle backups, respond to outages, migrate a site, or recover from an attack. The cheapest cash price is not always the cheapest total cost.

Use these worksheets:

First-year cost = upfront hosting charge + domain registration + email + backups + security + software + expected usage + taxes
Renewal-year cost = hosting renewal + domain renewal + recurring add-ons + expected usage + maintenance + taxes
Three-year cost = initial promotional term + renewal costs for remaining months + domains + add-ons + usage charges + maintenance

Worked cost examples

Example 1: Low-cost self-hosted WordPress site

Using Hostinger Premium’s listed 48-month offer:

  • Advertised equivalent: $2.99 per month.
  • Cash charged upfront: $143.52 for 48 months.
  • Effective first-year allocation: $35.88, although the full $143.52 is paid immediately.
  • Listed renewal rate: $10.99 per month.
  • Renewal-year hosting cost: approximately $131.88.
  • Domain: free for the first year on qualifying plans, then the applicable renewal price.
  • Email: two mailboxes per website free for one year on the listed Premium plan.
  • SSL: included.

The important point is that the first payment is not $2.99. It is $143.52. See Hostinger’s current plan details.

Using DreamPress 1:

  • First-year rate: $14.99 per month.
  • First-year hosting total: approximately $179.88.
  • Listed renewal rate: $19.99 per month.
  • Renewal-year hosting total: approximately $239.88.
  • Domain: free for one year according to the listed plan.
  • Backups, staging, migration, email, SSL, and managed WordPress features: included according to the listed plan.

Domain renewal, paid plugins, premium themes, and maintenance may still apply. See DreamHost’s hosting plans.

Example 3: DIY cloud VM

Using a $4 per month DigitalOcean Basic Droplet:

  • Compute: $4 per month.
  • Weekly backups: approximately $0.80 per month.
  • Daily backups: approximately $1.20 per month.
  • Basic infrastructure subtotal: approximately $4.80–$5.20 per month.
  • Domain, email, monitoring, external backups, control-panel software, taxes, and administration: separate.

The server is inexpensive because the operator supplies the system administration and recovery work. See DigitalOcean Droplet pricing and backup pricing.

Example 4: Hosted ecommerce

Using Shopify Basic:

  • Annual billing: $29 per month, or $348 for the annual-equivalent subscription.
  • Monthly billing: $39 per month, or $468 over 12 months.
  • Online domestic-card rate: from 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction on the listed plan.
  • Apps, themes, domain, tax tools, shipping tools, and marketing: separate or plan-dependent.

At $10,000 per month in domestic card sales across 200 transactions, processing would be approximately $350 per month at 2.9% plus $0.30. That is about $4,200 per year in processing, before the platform subscription and other store costs. See Shopify pricing and Stripe pricing.

Business WordPress site Managed WordPress About $180 in the first year in the DreamPress example, then about $240 for the hosting renewal year Premium plugins, maintenance, higher traffic, security cleanup, and additional sites
Content publication Managed WordPress or a managed VPS with CDN and off-site backups Often $15–$100 or more per month depending on traffic and media Images, video, CDN transfer, editorial users, search, caching, and traffic spikes
Small online store Hosted ecommerce platform or managed WooCommerce At least about $29 per month for a Shopify Basic annual-equivalent subscription before apps and payment fees Transaction volume, apps, shipping, taxes, email marketing, fraud tools, and support
Developer application Cloud VM, managed application platform, or serverless services About $5–$50 per month for small infrastructure before databases, backups, and labor Always-on services, database usage, logs, egress, queues, monitoring, and redundancy
High-traffic or media-heavy service Multi-service cloud, dedicated server, or specialized media architecture Often $100–$500 or more per month Traffic, video delivery, redundancy, support, compliance, and data transfer

The ranges in this table are planning guidance, not guarantees. A site with little traffic but complex software can cost more than a busy static site. A media-heavy website can spend more on storage and delivery than on its web server.

How to choose the economical hosting architecture

Choose free static hosting when

  • The site is mostly static and can be generated during deployment.
  • It does not require server-side WordPress, a database, or persistent uploads.
  • Forms, comments, authentication, and payments can use external services.
  • You understand the free tier’s traffic, build, request, and commercial-use limits.

Choose shared hosting when

  • You are launching a blog, portfolio, brochure site, or local-business website.
  • You need WordPress, PHP, a conventional CMS, email, and a control panel.
  • Traffic is modest and predictable.
  • You do not want to maintain a server.
  • The plan’s CPU, RAM, process, inode, database, backup, and email limits are adequate.

Choose managed WordPress when

  • WordPress is important to revenue or lead generation.
  • Automatic updates, staging, backups, and WordPress support have real value.
  • A broken plugin or outage would cost more than the monthly premium.
  • You want predictable operations instead of maximum server control.

Choose a self-managed VPS when

  • You understand Linux, deployments, networking, databases, and server security.
  • Root access or custom software is important.
  • Several applications can share one server efficiently.
  • You can maintain off-site backups, monitoring, patching, and a tested recovery process.
  • The lower infrastructure invoice justifies the technical labor.

Choose a managed VPS or application platform when

  • Shared hosting no longer provides sufficient resources.
  • The site requires a database, queue, worker, background process, or custom runtime.
  • Your team lacks the time or expertise to manage the underlying server.
  • Support and predictable operations matter more than the lowest possible infrastructure price.

Choose serverless or edge hosting when

  • Traffic is variable or bursty.
  • The application fits the platform’s runtime and deployment model.
  • Automatic scaling is useful.
  • You can monitor usage-based billing and accept dependence on platform-specific services.

Choose a hosted ecommerce platform when

  • You need checkout, inventory, taxes, shipping, payments, and store administration quickly.
  • Operational simplicity is more valuable than complete infrastructure control.
  • You have modeled the subscription, app costs, and payment fees.

Hosting cost traps to check before buying

  1. Introductory pricing: Record the term, upfront charge, renewal rate, and renewal interval. A monthly equivalent can conceal a large prepaid bill.
  2. Free domains: Confirm whether the domain is free only for year one, which TLDs qualify, and what renewal, privacy, and transfer charges apply.
  3. Unlimited plans: Look for CPU, RAM, PHP-worker, inode, concurrent-process, database, cron, and email-sending restrictions. Unlimited disk space does not mean unlimited computing capacity.
  4. Included backups: Check frequency, database coverage, retention, geographic separation, restore fees, download access, and what happens after cancellation.
  5. Free SSL: HTTPS encrypts transport; it does not secure vulnerable software, weak passwords, or compromised accounts.
  6. Cheap VPS pricing: Add backups, security, monitoring, email, control-panel fees, administration, and recovery time.
  7. Serverless billing: Estimate requests, execution duration, allocated memory, storage, database operations, logs, and data transfer instead of expecting a flat bill.
  8. Media-heavy sites: Video can make storage, CDN delivery, and egress the dominant expenses. Ordinary web hosting may not be the right architecture.
  9. Ecommerce transaction costs: Include payment fees in every store budget. Subscription price alone is not a useful comparison.
  10. Uptime claims: Distinguish a marketing claim from a contractual SLA, service credits, actual application availability, scheduled maintenance, DNS, and third-party dependencies. DreamHost advertises a 100% uptime guarantee, while Bluehost lists a 99.99% uptime SLA on the referenced plans; these are provider claims subject to their specific terms, not independent performance measurements.
  11. Taxes and geography: Confirm currency, country, billing term, VAT or GST, sales tax, and whether tax is excluded. Hostinger and Bluehost identify taxes such as VAT and GST as excluded from listed prices on the referenced pages.
  12. Automatic add-ons: Review checkout for paid backups, security, SEO tools, domain privacy, premium email, and extended support that may be preselected or renew separately.
  13. Cancellation and migration: Check refund windows, migration assistance, export options, domain transfer rules, and whether you can download a complete backup.

A practical hosting-cost checklist

Before purchasing, answer these questions in writing:

  • What does the plan cost today, including the required prepaid term?
  • What is the renewal price in year two and year three?
  • How many websites, domains, databases, mailboxes, and users are included?
  • What are the actual CPU, RAM, process, inode, storage, and database limits?
  • Is bandwidth unmetered, capped, or usage-priced?
  • Are backups automatic, and how long are they retained?
  • Can you download backups and restore without opening a support ticket?
  • Is the domain free only for the first year?
  • Who controls the domain registrar account?
  • Is email included, and what are mailbox storage and sending limits?
  • Is SSL automated and renewable?
  • Do you need a CDN, object storage, image optimization, or video platform?
  • Who patches the server and responds to an outage?
  • What happens if traffic doubles?
  • What will payment processing, apps, plugins, and maintenance add?
  • Are taxes included in the displayed price?
  • What are the refund, cancellation, transfer, and migration terms?

Recommended budget bands

Monthly budget Recommended starting point Do not overlook
$0–$3 Free static hosting if the site fits the platform Custom domain, forms, databases, usage limits, and recovery
$5–$15 Conventional shared hosting for a simple site Renewal price, long-term prepayment, and resource restrictions
$15–$40 Managed WordPress or a managed VPS Whether support, backups, staging, and updates justify the premium
$40–$100 Higher-resource managed hosting or a small cloud application Database, backup, monitoring, and bandwidth charges
$100 or more Multi-service, high-traffic, ecommerce, media, or enterprise infrastructure Redundancy, compliance, egress, support, and business continuity

These bands are selection guidelines, not performance guarantees. A small static site can remain nearly free, while a modest-looking business application may require several paid services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest way to host a website?

For a genuinely static site, a free Netlify or Vercel tier can reduce hosting to $0, although you may still pay for a domain and external services. For WordPress or a conventional CMS, shared hosting is usually the least expensive practical option. A low-cost VPS may have a smaller provider bill but requires you to pay with administration time and technical responsibility.

Is website hosting free with a domain?

Usually not. Some hosting promotions include a domain for the first year, but the domain normally has a renewal price. Free static hosting may include SSL and custom-domain support but generally does not provide the domain name itself.

How much should a small business budget for hosting?

A small brochure or local-business site can often budget about $3–$30 per month for hosting, plus a domain and any business email. Managed WordPress may cost about $15–$40 per month. Add email, maintenance, backups, premium software, taxes, and the cost of downtime when calculating the real budget.

Is managed WordPress worth the extra cost?

It can be worthwhile when WordPress generates leads or revenue and you value automatic updates, backups, staging, migration help, and WordPress-specific support. It may not be economical for a simple static site or for an experienced operator who already manages a secure VPS and tested backups.

Can a $4 VPS host a business website?

It can host a small site technically, but the advertised server price is not the total cost. You must also account for security hardening, updates, monitoring, off-site backups, email, database administration, recovery, and your own labor. A managed plan may be less expensive overall if you do not already have those skills and processes.

What is the difference between hosting cost and website cost?

Hosting is only the infrastructure or platform subscription. Total website cost also includes the domain, email, backups, security, CDN or storage, themes and plugins, ecommerce apps, payment processing, maintenance, and taxes.

The Bottom Line

For most beginners and small businesses, start with the simplest architecture that meets the site’s needs. Use free static hosting for a truly static site, shared hosting for a conventional low-traffic website, managed WordPress when WordPress support and maintenance matter, a VPS or cloud platform when you need custom software, and a hosted ecommerce platform when store operations are more important than infrastructure control.

Before comparing providers, write down the amount charged today, the renewal price, the domain renewal, email, backup retention, resource limits, usage charges, payment fees, and maintenance responsibility. The cheapest advertised monthly price is rarely the cheapest three-year cost.
