Monarch Money is the best expense tracker app for most households because it combines transaction tracking, budgeting, investments, subscriptions, net worth, reports, goals, and household collaboration in one polished dashboard. Choose YNAB instead if you want a strict zero-based budgeting method, Quicken Simplifi for low-cost automated tracking, Copilot Money if you primarily use Apple devices, Rocket Money for subscription cleanup, or Goodbudget for free manual envelope budgeting.
Prices and feature details in this guide were checked against provider pages on August 9, 2026. Promotional prices, app-store billing, availability, and included features can change.

How to choose an expense tracker app
“Expense tracker” can mean two different things. Some apps primarily import transactions and show where your money went. Others make you decide where available money should go before you spend it. The best choice depends on whether you want visibility, behavior change, or a specific cleanup job such as finding subscriptions.
- Choose Monarch Money if you want one shared household view of spending, accounts, investments, subscriptions, net worth, and financial goals.
- Choose YNAB if you want to assign available money to categories and actively control spending before it happens.
- Choose Simplifi if you want automatic imports, recurring bills, cash-flow projections, and a low annual cost without adopting envelope budgeting.
- Choose Copilot if you live in the U.S., use Apple hardware, and care about fast transaction review and visual presentation.
- Choose Rocket Money if forgotten subscriptions, recurring charges, and bill negotiation are the immediate problem.
- Choose Goodbudget if you prefer manual entry and envelope budgeting, particularly when sharing a plan with a partner without connecting bank accounts.
Before paying, check three practical issues: whether the app supports your country and financial institutions, whether it has the device you use, and whether you want automatic tracking or a system that requires regular hands-on decisions. Bank connections can fail or need reauthorization, so no automated tracker should replace reviewing statements and account balances.

1. Monarch Money: best overall for most households
Monarch Money is the strongest all-around choice for a household that wants more than a list of transactions. Its paid plan combines expense tracking with budgeting, custom reports, investment tracking, subscription tracking, financial goals, net worth information, and unlimited connected accounts. It also supports unlimited collaborators, so another household member can participate without a separate user charge. Details are listed on Monarch’s pricing page.
Price and access
Monarch’s current displayed annual price is $99.99 per year, equivalent to $8.33 per month. Monthly pricing is shown at checkout. The app is available on the web, iOS, Android, and iPad. Monarch says it connects to more than 13,000 financial institutions through multiple data providers; actual availability still depends on the institution and connection method.
Why it stands out
Monarch is particularly useful when several people need the same financial picture. It is also a good fit for users who want reports and net-worth tracking alongside ordinary spending categories. Its budgeting system supports both category and flexible budgeting, but it is built around a monthly cash-flow model rather than YNAB’s stricter “assign every available dollar” workflow.
Important limitations
- Monarch is a read-and-organize service. It does not directly access a bank account in the sense of controlling it, and it cannot move money into or out of accounts. See the Monarch getting-started guide.
- The budget view rounds amounts to the nearest dollar instead of displaying exact cents.
- People expecting a prescriptive, zero-based plan may find Monarch too flexible. It helps you monitor and plan cash flow, but it does not impose YNAB’s method.
Useful setup paths
To invite a household member on the web, click the arrow next to your name and send the invitation. To change a budget category’s settings, hover over the category name and select the settings gear. Those controls are documented in Monarch’s getting-started guide and budget guide.

YNAB is the best option for someone who wants to change spending behavior rather than simply review past purchases. Its central method is to assign available money to categories, spend against those assignments, and create targets for upcoming expenses. That zero-based approach makes trade-offs visible: money assigned to one category is not simultaneously available for another.
Price, trial, and access
U.S. pricing is currently $109 per year or $14.99 per month. A direct signup includes a 34-day trial, although signups through third-party app stores may have different trial and payment requirements. One subscription can be shared with up to six people. YNAB offers web, iOS, and Android access.
Direct import currently supports select banks in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and European Union. People elsewhere can use file-based import. Support depends on the individual bank, so check availability before building your entire process around automatic syncing. Current pricing and regional details are on YNAB’s pricing page.
Who should use it
YNAB is a strong fit for people with irregular income, debt-payoff goals, overspending problems, or a need to deliberately prepare for non-monthly expenses. It requires more attention than an automated dashboard: you need to categorize transactions, reconcile what happened, and adjust assignments when priorities change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCritical limitation: currencies
YNAB lets you select a currency, but one spending plan cannot combine multiple currencies. Someone managing both U.S.-dollar and foreign-currency finances may need separate plans or a different tool. This is an important distinction for expatriates, frequent travelers, and households with accounts in more than one currency.
Connection and interface details
Bank import is not universal. A connection may require reauthorization, fail temporarily, or work better through another provider. YNAB says that after a connection reset it may automatically switch to a better connector when one is available. New features may also roll out gradually, so two users can temporarily see different interface changes.

Recent updates include automatic approval of both sides of a matched transfer when one side is approved, transaction photos, a web Hide Amounts feature for displaying a plan without exposing balances, and automatic matching of credit-card payments on iOS when Direct Import is used. The YNAB updates page and What’s New page document these changes.
3. Quicken Simplifi: best low-cost all-around tracker
Quicken Simplifi is a useful middle ground between a passive transaction feed and a strict envelope budget. It imports transactions automatically, organizes spending, tracks recurring bills, supports savings goals and investments, and provides cash-flow projections, reports, and a Spending Plan.
Current price and features
Quicken’s current pricing page displays Simplifi at $2.99 per month billed annually. The page also shows a crossed-out regular price of $5.99 per month, so treat $2.99 as the current displayed offer rather than a guaranteed permanent price. Simplifi is available on the web, iOS, and Android. Its included tools cover spending, savings, budgets, investments, cash-flow projections, reports, and savings goals. See Quicken’s pricing comparison.
How the Spending Plan works
The Spending Plan estimates what remains available after income, bills, savings goals, and planned spending. On the web, hover over the left panel and click Spending Plan. During initial setup, the documented sequence is Spending Plan → See how it works → Next → Get Started → I am ready. More detail is available in Simplifi’s Spending Plan guide.
Limitations and common mistakes
- The Spending Plan begins in the month the subscription starts. It does not reconstruct a historical budget retroactively.
- New users may not have enough historical data for reliable future projections. Give the app several months of accurate information before treating its forecasts as authoritative.
- Simplifi avoids double-counting recurring transactions by placing transactions linked to recurring reminders in the Bills section rather than Planned Spending.
- Deleting a recurring item from the Spending Plan permanently removes that item from Simplifi, so edit it carefully rather than deleting it casually.
- You can add a manual account if you do not want to connect a financial institution, but Simplifi still requires either a connected or manual account to complete onboarding.
- If you subscribe through Apple or Google, upgrades, downgrades, billing, and refunds must be managed through the applicable app store.
4. Copilot Money: best for Apple users
Copilot Money is a premium, automation-first tracker with a particularly polished interface. It automatically categorizes transactions and supports custom budgets, subscriptions, savings goals, investments, net worth, cash flow, alerts, and split transactions.
Price and availability
Copilot currently lists $95 per year or $13 per month. It is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web. It supports U.S.-based financial institutions and accounts only, and it has no Android app. There is no permanent free tier, although new users receive a free trial. Copilot says it connects to more than 10,000 U.S. financial institutions, including direct integrations with Venmo, Apple Card, and Coinbase. Check the Copilot FAQ for current availability.
Copilot’s web version became available in December 2025, but the company says the web app still does not include every feature available on iOS and Mac. For an Apple household, that is usually a manageable trade-off; for an Android user or someone outside the U.S., it is a decisive limitation.
Get the transaction type right
Copilot uses three transaction types:
- Income: earnings and other inflows that are not included in spending budgets.
- Internal Transfer: movement between your own accounts, including credit-card payments. These are excluded from spending budgets.
- Regular: ordinary spending and refunds. These are categorized and included in budgets.
A credit-card payment mistakenly left as a Regular expense can make spending appear too high because the original purchase and the payment may both be counted. Classify the payment as an Internal Transfer when it is simply moving money between your own accounts.
There is one important exception for people who want a zero-based-style budget: if you intentionally want a transfer to savings or investments counted as a budgeted outflow, Copilot’s guidance says to mark the outgoing transfer as Regular and categorize it as Savings or Investments. Copilot explains these distinctions in its transaction-types guide.
Useful account paths
To turn off auto-renewal after onboarding, use Settings → Subscription → Manage your subscription. To manage an existing subscription, open Settings and tap Manage your subscription. Subscriptions purchased through Apple must be managed in Apple’s App Store subscription settings. If a bank cannot be found through Plaid, select Not on Plaid? during the connection flow. Copilot documents these paths in its quick-start guide and subscription guide.

5. Rocket Money: best for subscriptions and recurring bills
Rocket Money is the best choice when the central problem is forgotten subscriptions, recurring charges, bill reminders, or trying to reduce bills. It is less compelling as a primary budgeting system for someone who wants rigorous category planning.
Free and Premium plans
The free tier includes core tools such as subscription tracking, budgeting, and bill reminders. Premium uses a sliding-scale price selected during signup, so there is no single universal Premium price to quote. New Premium members receive a seven-day free trial; after that, the subscription continues at the selected price unless canceled.
Premium adds features including custom budget categories, financial goals, credit-score tracking, real-time account syncing, desktop access, unlimited budget categories, and cancellation services. The current details are in Rocket Money’s pricing help article.
Bill negotiation is a separate paid service
Rocket Money’s bill-negotiation service is not free merely because the app has a free tier. If Rocket Money successfully reduces a bill, it charges 35%–60% of the first year’s savings. Compare that potential fee with the amount you expect to save before requesting negotiation.
Access and failure modes
Rocket Money now offers a desktop experience, but its help center says free features remain available through the mobile app while desktop use is tied to Premium access. Subscription detection also depends on linked-account data. If an account fails to sync, recurring charges may not be detected or updated.
The free plan does not include all customization and syncing features: unlimited categories and real-time syncing are Premium features. If your goal is simply to identify subscriptions, start with the free tier; if you need detailed categories, live syncing, or desktop access, check the Premium price offered to you before committing.
6. Goodbudget: best free manual envelope tracker
Goodbudget is the clearest choice for people who want the traditional envelope method, prefer manual entry, or want to share a household plan without connecting bank accounts. You divide available money among envelopes such as groceries, transportation, utilities, and annual expenses, then record spending against those envelopes.
Free plan and Premium limits
Goodbudget’s signup page lists a genuinely ongoing Free Forever plan at $0. The free plan includes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- 10 regular envelopes
- 10 additional annual or goal envelopes
- One account
- Two devices
- One year of history
- Debt tracking and community support
Premium costs $10 per month or $80 per year and adds automatic bank sync for U.S. banks, unlimited envelopes, unlimited accounts, five devices, seven years of history, and email support. Goodbudget is available on the web, Android, and iPhone. See the Goodbudget signup page for the current plan comparison.
What free users should know
Automatic bank sync is not part of the free plan and is limited to U.S. banks even on Premium. If you want to track cash, create a Cash account. Because free users are limited to one account, cash tracking may consume the only account slot and make the free plan too restrictive for a household with several checking or credit accounts.

When bank imports are used, transactions may need to be matched and reconciled. Goodbudget provides separate workflows for matching imported transactions, reconnecting an account when syncing stops, and reconciling accounts. Manual review is important because an imported transaction that is not matched correctly can distort both the account balance and the envelope balance.
Household and data-management paths
On the web, manage the household plan or upgrade by using My Household → Update to Premium. To close a household, use My Household → Close Household → “Yes, I will NEVER USE MY DATA again”. Closing permanently removes the data and cannot be undone, so export or preserve anything important first. The billing instructions are in Goodbudget’s billing help.

Which expense tracker is best for your situation?
You want the broadest financial dashboard
Pick Monarch Money. It is the most complete single view for spending, household finances, investments, subscriptions, net worth, goals, and reports. Its flexibility is an advantage for people who do not want every dollar governed by a formal method.
You repeatedly overspend despite tracking expenses
Pick YNAB. An app that tells you where money went may not change what you do next month. YNAB’s requirement to assign available money to categories creates a more active decision process. The trade-off is that it takes more maintenance and costs more than Simplifi’s current displayed offer.
You want automation at the lowest listed cost
Pick Quicken Simplifi, subject to confirming the renewal price. It provides imports, recurring bills, goals, reports, and projections without requiring envelope budgeting. Its projections become more useful after it has several months of accurate history.
You use an iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Pick Copilot Money if you are in the U.S. and want a polished Apple-centered experience. Confirm that the web features you need are available if you plan to use a computer, since the web app does not yet contain every iOS and Mac feature.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You are paying for services you forgot about
Start with Rocket Money. Its free tier can address basic subscription tracking and bill reminders. Consider Premium only after reviewing the sliding-scale price and deciding whether custom categories, real-time syncing, desktop access, or cancellation services justify it. Treat bill negotiation as a separate service with a 35%–60% first-year-savings fee.
You want a free system and do not mind entering transactions
Pick Goodbudget. It is the strongest no-cost choice here for manual envelope budgeting, provided the free limits—one account, two devices, and limited envelopes and history—fit your situation. It is especially suitable when avoiding bank connections is a feature rather than a problem.
How to set up any expense tracker accurately
- List every account you want included. Include checking, savings, credit cards, loans, investment accounts, and cash only if the app supports the account type and you actually need it in the dashboard.
- Decide how transfers should behave. Payments between your own accounts are usually transfers, not expenses. Misclassifying a credit-card payment can double-count spending. If you intentionally budget savings or investment contributions, follow the app’s specific treatment rather than assuming every transfer should be excluded.
- Review imported categories. Automatic categorization saves time but can misread merchants, refunds, split purchases, cash withdrawals, and transfers. Correct the category and use the app’s rules or recurring tools where available.
- Reconcile against statements. Imported data can be delayed, duplicated, missing, or disconnected. Compare the app’s account balance and recent transactions with the financial institution’s statement or current balance.
- Configure recurring charges. Check whether recurring items are handled as bills, planned spending, subscriptions, or ordinary transactions. Simplifi, for example, places transactions linked to recurring reminders in its Bills section to avoid double-counting.
- Check the first forecast carefully. Simplifi’s projections may be weak before several months of history. A new YNAB plan needs correct starting balances and assignments. A Monarch monthly budget may round to whole dollars. These are workflow differences, not necessarily errors.
- Review the renewal terms. Annual offers can be promotional, Rocket Money Premium varies by signup, and Apple- or Google-billed subscriptions must generally be managed in the relevant app store.
Claims about expense tracker apps that are outdated
“Mint is still the obvious free alternative.”
Do not recommend Mint as a current mainstream option for new users without verifying a functioning consumer signup experience. Intuit’s current Mint terms remain legal documentation, but they do not establish that the former Mint consumer product is operating as a normal, available expense-tracking service.
“Rocket Money Premium has one fixed price.”
That is outdated. Rocket Money says Premium uses a sliding-scale price selected during signup, and prices can vary by platform and over time.

“Copilot works on Android and internationally.”
It does not currently list Android access and supports U.S.-based accounts only.
“YNAB supports multiple currencies in one budget.”
It does not. A spending plan uses one selected currency; multiple currencies cannot be combined in a single plan.

It does not. Simplifi’s Spending Plan starts in the month the subscription begins and is not retroactive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free expense tracker app?
Goodbudget is the best free option in this group if you are willing to enter transactions manually and use envelope budgeting. Its free plan is ongoing, but it is limited to 10 regular envelopes, 10 annual or goal envelopes, one account, two devices, and one year of history. Rocket Money also has a free tier, but several of its more useful syncing and budgeting features require Premium.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What is the best expense tracker for couples?
Monarch Money is the strongest general-purpose choice for couples because its paid plan includes unlimited collaborators. Goodbudget is a good alternative if both people prefer manual envelope budgeting and do not need automatic bank synchronization on the free plan. YNAB can be shared with up to six people but uses a more demanding zero-based method.
Which expense tracker is best for multiple currencies?
None of the six apps should be treated as a single-plan, multi-currency solution based on the documented limitations. In particular, YNAB does not allow multiple currencies in one spending plan, and Copilot supports U.S.-based accounts only. Check the provider’s current regional and currency support before subscribing.
Should a credit-card payment count as an expense?
Usually no, if the credit-card purchase was already recorded: the payment is a transfer between your own accounts, and counting it again would double-count the purchase. Copilot classifies this as an Internal Transfer. An intentional savings or investment contribution may be treated differently if you want it included in your budget, so use the app’s documented transaction rules.
Is Rocket Money Premium worth paying for?
It can be worthwhile if you need custom categories, unlimited categories, real-time syncing, desktop access, financial goals, or cancellation services. Compare the sliding-scale price shown during signup with the value of those features. Bill negotiation is separately charged at 35%–60% of the first year’s savings when successful.
