Yes. EB Games is returning as the name of Canada’s video-game retailer after Stephan Tetrault acquired the Canadian business in May 2025. The deal covered Electronics Boutique Canada Inc., identified in the announcement as GameStop Canada—not GameStop Corp. as a whole. The company said the retailer would transition back to EB Games Canada over the following months.

Who bought GameStop Canada?

On May 5, 2025, GameStop Canada announced that Stephan Tetrault had acquired Electronics Boutique Canada Inc. from GameStop Global Holdings S.A.R.L. The announcement identified Tetrault as the owner and CEO of the newly rebranded EB Games Canada. It describes a sale of the Canadian retail business, not a purchase of GameStop Corp. or its broader operations. GameStop Canada’s announcement and its May 5, 2025 press release provide the transaction details.

Why is the EB Games name coming back?

GameStop had announced in July 2021 that Canadian EB Games stores and the online store would adopt the GameStop name by the end of that year. In May 2025, the new owner announced a return to EB Games Canada. The change reverses the earlier Canadian brand transition; the announcement does not establish that the retailer’s business or ownership is returning to its pre-2021 state. GameStop Corp.’s July 28, 2021 announcement documents the original rebrand.

What the company said it wanted to build

The 2025 release described plans for in-store events, expanded product lines, closer links with pop-culture brands, and a stronger focus on Canadian customers. Tetrault said the change was about “bringing something back that Canadians truly loved.” Those are the company’s stated rationale and plans, not independent evidence of customer sentiment or proof that every initiative has been carried out. The release quoted GameStop Canada President Jim Tyo describing an ambition for EB Games to become a hub for gaming and fandom culture.

What changes were announced—and what is not confirmed?

The company said the nationwide transition would take place over the coming months, with updated store signs, a redesigned website, and new branding across digital and social platforms. The release announced a rollout plan; it does not confirm a specific completion date for every store, website, or social account. It also reported that GameStop Canada had more than 185 stores across Canada. That is the company’s figure in its 2025 acquisition announcement, not a current independently verified store count. The press release contains both statements.

What does the announcement mean for preorders, gift cards, and protection plans?

GameStop Canada said day-to-day business would continue as normal during the transition and that preorders, gift cards, and products covered by protection plans would continue. These are the company’s transition assurances; they do not resolve every customer’s order, claim, or later policy question. For a specific purchase or account, check the retailer’s current terms and contact customer service with your order or claim details.

A historical FAQ from the 2021 rebrand said Canadian policies would remain distinct from U.S. policies, EB Games gift cards would continue to work, and closed stores would not reopen. That FAQ concerned the earlier transition, so it should not be treated as a definitive statement of current gift-card or service policies. The historical FAQ is useful only as background.
