Embracer later set a $247 million purchase price for selected Saber assets, including assumed earnout liabilities, with additional consideration possible under specific conditions. The sale closed in March 2024. Separately, Saber’s chief creative officer said in March 2026 that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was still in development; he gave no release date or further details.
What happened to the $500 million Saber sale?
On February 29, 2024, Bloomberg reported that Embracer Group planned to sell Saber Interactive to private investors in a deal worth up to $500 million. Bloomberg attributed the figure to a person familiar with the transaction. That was a report about a proposed deal, not Embracer’s later official purchase-price announcement. Bloomberg’s February 29, 2024 report also said Saber would continue developing the KOTOR remake. Embracer’s March 14 announcement gave different terms and a narrower scope.

| February 29, 2024 — Bloomberg | Up to $500 million for a proposed Saber sale, citing a person familiar with the transaction. | A reported proposal value; not the official price later announced for selected assets. |
| March 14, 2024 — Embracer Group | $247 million purchase price for selected assets from Saber’s operative group, including $44 million in assumed earnout liabilities. | The official announced price for the specified asset package. |
| March 14, 2024 — Embracer Group | Up to $94 million in additional consideration could be payable if the buyer resold the assets for higher consideration, subject to conditions and time periods. | Conditional possible additional consideration, not a guaranteed payment. |
| March 28, 2024 — Embracer Group | Embracer said all conditions had been fulfilled and the divestment completed. | Confirms the transaction closed; does not establish that the possible resale-related additional consideration was earned. |
Embracer named Beacon Interactive, a company controlled by Saber co-founder Matthew Karch, as the buyer. The deal covered selected assets from Saber’s operative group; the official announcement should not be described as a $500 million cash sale of the entire company. Embracer’s announcement sets out the asset scope and payment components, while its March 28 completion notice confirms closing.
Is the KOTOR remake still in development?
According to a March 6, 2026 TechRadar report, Saber chief creative officer Tim Willits was asked about the project’s future and replied: “Yes, it is still in development. That’s all I can say.” The statement supports saying that the remake was still in development as of that report. It does not establish a release date, development schedule, or guarantee about when—or whether—the game will launch.

What did Embracer say about the game before the sale?
Embracer’s February 15, 2024 interim report listed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake on PC and PS5. Its project table identified the intellectual property as licensed, publishing as external, and main development as internal. Those are details from a dated slate, not a current platform or release commitment. Embracer’s February 2024 interim report is the source for those classifications.
The studio history helps explain why Saber and Aspyr are both associated with the project. Embracer’s 2021 acquisition announcement said Aspyr was acquired through its wholly owned Saber subsidiary and would operate as a standalone entity under Saber. That background does not change the more limited asset scope in Embracer’s 2024 divestment announcement. Embracer’s 2021 announcement describes the acquisition structure.

What is known—and not known—about a release?
The cited sources establish a dated PC and PS5 listing in Embracer’s February 2024 slate and a brief March 2026 statement that the remake remained in development. They do not provide a release date or a more detailed development update. They also do not establish a currently purchasable remake edition. The original Knights of the Old Republic is a separate game; the cited reporting is about the remake project.
