On April 22, 2025, Elon Musk said his time working on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) would “drop significantly,” probably starting in May. He did not announce that he would leave DOGE in May: he said he expected to spend one or two days a week on government matters if President Donald Trump wanted him to and the work remained useful. Musk’s departure from his role spearheading DOGE was marked publicly on May 30.
What Musk announced on April 22
Musk made the announcement during Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 earnings call. He said his “time allocation to DOGE will drop significantly” probably starting in May, and described DOGE as “mostly done.” But he also gave a conditional estimate for continuing government work: “I think I’ll continue to spend a day or two per week on government matters for as long as the President would like me to do so and as long as it would be useful.” Axios reported the remarks; CBS News also covered the call.
That was a plan to reduce his time, not confirmation of a fixed weekly schedule or a completed departure. The one-to-two-day estimate was conditional on Trump’s wishes and Musk’s view that the work was useful.
Announcement versus departure: the timeline

The May 30 event—not the April announcement—marked his public departure from the role. The Associated Press reported that some DOGE staff would remain in the administration and that Trump suggested Musk could still visit and advise him. Musk’s departure therefore did not, by itself, mean DOGE operations had ended.

What Musk said about DOGE’s results
In the May 1 Axios interview, Musk said, “In the grand scheme of things, I think we’ve been effective. Not as effective as I like … but we’ve made progress.” He also said DOGE had cut $160 billion in spending. That figure was Musk’s reported claim; the cited coverage does not establish it as an independently audited savings total. He also entertained the possibility that DOGE would continue, saying, “DOGE is a way of life, like Buddhism.” Axios published the interview.
The Tesla earnings-call context
The announcement came as investors were assessing Musk’s divided attention alongside Tesla’s results. CBS News reported that Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 revenue was down 9% and profit was down 71%. Those figures describe Tesla’s reported results, not DOGE’s performance; the timing provides context but does not establish that Tesla’s results caused Musk to announce a reduced DOGE role.
