Email A/B Testing: A Practical Guide to Better Campaign Conversions

A practical guide to email A/B testing: test one change, choose a goal-aligned metric, and interpret vendor sample-size guidance without treating it as a guarantee.

Email A/B testing compares different versions of an email with separate groups of recipients to see which performs better on a metric chosen in advance. It can help improve campaign decisions, but it cannot guarantee that conversions will double. A stronger result starts with a focused question, a suitable success metric, and enough time and recipients to measure it fairly.

What email A/B testing tells you

An A/B test sends different versions of an email to separate recipient groups, then compares their results. The versions might differ in subject line, sender name, email content, or send time. The purpose is to learn how recipients respond to a specific change—not to prove that every audience will react the same way.

Some platforms let you send the better-performing version to recipients who were not in the test sample. HubSpot describes that workflow in its marketing email A/B test guide.

Choose what to test and make the result interpretable

Mailchimp lists four variables for email A/B tests: subject line, From name, content, and send time. Examples include testing a different subject-line phrasing, sender identity, message copy, template, or delivery time. See Mailchimp’s description of A/B tests for its documented options.

If you want to know which change caused a difference, test one element at a time. Changing the subject line and the offer together may produce a winner, but it will not tell you which change mattered. Write down the question before sending—for example, “Does this shorter subject line lead to more clicks?”—and keep other conditions as similar as possible.

Pick the metric that matches the campaign goal

Choose the winning metric before launch. HubSpot’s email testing workflow offers open rate, click rate, and click-through rate; Mailchimp also describes tests using opens, clicks, or revenue. These measures answer different questions, so a version that wins on opens may not win on sales. Platform options are documented by HubSpot and Mailchimp.

  • Open rate: Useful when the question is whether a subject line or sender presentation draws attention. It does not establish that more people clicked or purchased.
  • Clicks or click-through rate: Better suited to evaluating whether the email prompted readers to visit a page or take another action.
  • Revenue or downstream conversions: More directly relevant to a sales goal, but requires tracking beyond the email itself and enough time for the outcome to occur.

For a conversion-focused campaign, follow the path from email delivery and exposure through click to the conversion you care about. Do not treat an open-rate win as proof of higher revenue.

Estimate whether your audience is large enough

There is no single contact-count threshold that guarantees a useful result. Vendor recommendations differ: HubSpot recommends at least 1,000 contacts for best results in its marketing email testing documentation; Mailchimp recommends at least 5,000 subscribed contacts for an effective test; and Litmus says to aim for 10,000 or more when possible. These are platform or vendor recommendations, not interchangeable scientific rules or guarantees of statistical power. Sources: HubSpot, Mailchimp, and Litmus.

The audience you need depends on how often the baseline outcome occurs, how large a difference would matter to you, how recipients are divided between versions, and which metric you measure. A small list may still support useful learning, but small differences are harder to distinguish from random variation. Avoid declaring a winner simply because one version is slightly ahead in a small sample.

Set a fair test period

Run the test long enough for the chosen outcome to mature. Opens, clicks, and revenue do not necessarily become observable on the same schedule, so a fixed duration is not right for every campaign. HubSpot’s workflow includes a test-length setting and a fallback version for inconclusive results; Mailchimp cautions that holidays, major sales, or unusual news can skew results. Its A/B testing best practices explain why timing and context matter.

Compare like with like where possible. If a campaign lands during a holiday or an unusual news event, the result may reflect that moment as well as the email variation. Do not call a winner based only on an early lead; wait until the selected metric has had a reasonable chance to register.

Run the test in a deliberate sequence

  1. Define the question. State the single change you want to evaluate and why you expect it might matter.
  2. Select the success metric. Choose opens, clicks, click-through rate, revenue, or another platform-supported outcome that matches the campaign goal.
  3. Prepare the versions. Change the one element under test and keep other email and audience conditions consistent.
  4. Set the sample and duration. Divide recipients between versions and allow time for the selected outcome to mature. Do not assume vendor contact-count guidance guarantees a reliable result.
  5. Decide what happens if the result is unclear. If the platform offers a fallback version or a manual decision, determine how you will handle an inconclusive result before sending.
  6. Review the result against the original question. Record which version performed better on the selected metric, then use that learning to inform a later campaign rather than treating one result as a universal rule.

Check platform fit before building a workflow

Email platforms differ in the variables and outcome metrics they document, the controls they provide for sample allocation and test duration, and what happens when the result is inconclusive. HubSpot documents allocation, metric selection, duration, and a fallback in its marketing email test workflow. Mailchimp documents subject line, From name, content, and send time, and says A/B test access depends on plan in its help documentation. Confirm current plan access and audience limits with the provider before relying on a feature.

What the “double your conversion” claim can—and cannot—mean

A/B testing is a method for learning and improving decisions, not a promise of a particular lift. Mailchimp’s feature page presents a statement from Wombi Rose, Lovepop’s co-founder, saying the company identified a strategy that “doubled our engagement and revenue.” That is a vendor-presented account from one company, not an independent estimate of the result a typical email marketer should expect. See Mailchimp’s A/B testing feature page.

For your own campaigns, judge success against a defined business outcome and keep the test narrow enough to explain. A result may guide the next campaign without guaranteeing the same response from a different audience, offer, or sending context.
