What EA’s 2.2 million figure measures
In its July 19, 2024 launch-day announcement, Electronic Arts said 2.2 million unique players had played College Football 25 during Early Access. EA also reported 600,000 additional players through the EA Play trial. Those are distinct access routes and figures, not a published sales total. EA’s announcement does not identify the 2.2 million as buyers, preorder customers, or copies sold.

EA executive Daryl Holt said the company was excited to “welcome millions more into the game with today’s launch.” That was EA’s description of the launch, not a separate count of players who joined after the announcement.
How early access differed from the trial and general release
College Football 25 launched worldwide on July 19, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Before launch, EA offered multiple ways to play early, including a Deluxe edition and an EA Play trial. EA’s announcement gives separate player counts for Early Access and the trial, but does not break down the Early Access figure by edition or access route.

EA’s pre-launch lineup also included Standard and Deluxe editions. Its edition announcement described the MVP Bundle as pairing the Deluxe editions of College Football 25 and Madden NFL 25, with three-day early access. These were historical launch offers, not current offers.
Why the game drew attention
The launch marked EA’s return to college football games after a long gap. EA said College Football 25 featured all 134 FBS universities, more than 150 stadiums, and thousands of current college athletes through name, image, and likeness arrangements. Those are EA’s stated figures and describe FBS coverage, not every college team or athlete.

EA promoted gameplay features including CampusIQ, Wear & Tear, Pre-Snap Recognition, and homefield advantages. Its modes included Dynasty, Road to Glory, Road to the College Football Playoff, and College Football Ultimate Team. The company outlined those features in its game reveal and modes announcement.

The 2.2 million number supports the claim that millions of unique players accessed the game early. It does not, by itself, show how many people bought the game, how many copies EA sold, or how many players remained active after launch. EA’s announcement was a publisher-reported launch metric, not an independently audited sales result.
